Looking to Switch to Game Development – Portfolio Tips?

I'm a web developer with 3 years of experience and have made a few Unity toy projects. What should I emphasize when trying to move to a game company? One polished small game vs. multiple prototypes? I'd love to hear opinions from current game developers.

Even for a toy project, it's a good idea to open-source the code on GitHub and include a link to the build files. Showing something that's actually playable is better than just talking about it.

Have you ever tried building a mobile version of a game made with Unity? The experience of releasing a game itself is a huge advantage. I recommend publishing it for free on Google Play.

I also included a game design document in my portfolio. By emphasizing the story of 'why I made this game,' the conversations in interviews flowed much more smoothly.

Leverage your web development experience. Including game server or tool development in your portfolio will help you stand out. It's not just about Unity skills.

I also transitioned from web to game development. I went to an interview with one highly polished game, but they asked more about code quality and structure. In Unity, try to focus on clean C# code.

I am a recruiter at a game company. Make sure to include gameplay videos and brief descriptions in your portfolio. Interviewers should be able to assess the game's quality without having to run it themselves.

I'm a professional game developer. A small, polished game is far better than a large, unfinished one. It's important to demonstrate experience with release, bug fixes, and incorporating feedback.

I switched jobs with multiple prototypes. The fact that I tried various genres and systems actually appealed to them. It gave the impression in interviews that I enjoy coming up with ideas.

Both have their pros and cons. Personally, I recommend attaching one polished game along with 2–3 short prototypes. The key is being able to explain 'why you made this.'
