Went to an art museum and it was way better than I expected
Over the weekend, I went to a night opening that’s only held on Thursdays and Fridays and checked it out. There were far fewer people than during the day, so I could stand in front of the works for a long time.
Honestly, I don’t know much about art. I’m barely able to follow along by reading the descriptions, but maybe because the lighting was dim, the paintings looked much different.
Next time, I’m going to try to go in time for a docent tour.

Night openings are a total cheat code, for real. During the day, you get crushed by the crowds, and instead of seeing the artworks, you just stare at the back of the person in front of you and leave.
I agree that low lighting makes paintings look different. I’ve also noticed colors look especially deep in dimly lit galleries. For docent tours, it’s best to go to a less crowded time slot if possible, and if you check the gallery floor plan in advance and plan your route, you’ll get much more out of the visit. For me, the routine I’ve settled into is: on my first visit, I always do a docent tour once, and on my second visit, I take my time looking around alone.
Well, isn't the idea that night openings are less crowded kind of outdated? These days, people come from Instagram specifically targeting the night hours, so if it's a popular exhibition, there are lines in the evening too lol. Since you didn't say which museum it was, it kind of sounds like you just got lucky. And as for standing in front of a piece for a long time—I can't tell if that was because there were no people or you just happened to time it well.
