AI image generation as a side hustle isn't bad
First off, I think this is a pretty decent side gig. There are quite a few people on Discord promoting AI image commission services, and the prices usually range from 20,000 to 50,000 won per style.
I have a Midjourney subscription myself, so I've been thinking about giving it a try. I think I could boost efficiency by approaching it like this:
- Standardize prompt writing into templates to produce each image in under 10 minutes
- Decide on a few art styles in advance and only take option requests from clients
- Include a condition that I'll keep revising the final image if they're not satisfied (to increase repeat purchases)
- Sometimes accept personal photo files and create avatars
The problem is I'm a bit uneasy about copyright. It's ambiguous whether images made with LoRA (trained model) files can be sold commercially. If anyone here does this as a side gig, please share some tips on writing contracts.

Well, I'm not so sure about that. With so many people offering AI art services these days, isn't that already a red ocean? If you don't have something to set you apart, it might just be a waste of time.
I've done something similar, and dealing with clients is harder than the actual earnings. If they keep requesting revisions because they're not satisfied, you'll be stuck all day. Make sure to include a revision limit in the contract.
Copyright issues can't be addressed uniformly because each LoRA file has its own license. The only option is to check whether commercial use is permitted, and it's a good idea to include a clause in the contract stating that 'commercial use rights are transferred.' That's what I do.
Personally, it's good for starting as a side hustle because the barrier to entry is low, but it has limitations for the long term. It could suddenly go south if the platform policy changes.
There's quite a demand for making avatars. But since it involves training AI on people's faces, we need to think about portrait rights issues.
