This is my first time negotiating salary: how much should I ask for?

I got a job offer for an experienced-hire role, and I'm wondering what percentage increase over my current salary would be reasonable to ask for.

I'm worried I'll ask for the wrong number and lose out, so I keep second-guessing every option.

But isn’t it more important to know the company’s range first, rather than talking in percentages? If you have a headhunter, ask them. That’s the fastest way.

When changing jobs, ask for at least 15–20% more. If you’re going to keep the same salary as your current job, there’s no reason to move.

Well, in today's market, if you ask for more than 20%, you often just get quietly dropped from the process. Asking for the highest number isn't always the answer.
