The 5 Books That Actually Stayed With Me This Year (Genres All Over the Place)

I read about 30 books this year, but only five have stayed with me over time. Here are a few of them.

  • A slim essay collection that lingers
  • A sci-fi novel that made me rethink human relationships after I finished it
  • An investing book whose mindset sections helped me more than the practical tactics
  • A book whose translation was so smooth that it made me want to reread it in the original
  • A history book that took me a month to read but was worth every bit of it

The common thread was that I read them all for “density,” not “speed.” Conversely, I can’t even remember the titles of the books I picked up just to read quickly.

What books have stayed with you this year? I’d love some recommendations.

If you don't give me even one title, how am I supposed to recommend anything? lol What I'm most curious about is what book it is.

Agreed, density is the answer.

I do something similar: I set aside one book a month as a 'slow read,' and I just read the rest however I want. Doing that naturally separates my speed reads from my density reads. I'm curious what history book it was.

Well, I’m not sure whether only 5 out of 30 staying with you is the books’ fault or your reading method. For me, if I don’t underline and take notes, I forget even the best books. If you didn’t keep any records, that seems like a bit of a shame.

I'm curious about books with smooth translations... If a translation is good enough to make you want to reread the original, the translator must be truly amazing.

In investing, it really feels like mindset is more than half the battle lol. Even if you memorize all the techniques, once your mental game goes, you ruin everything.
