My Stock Is Down 30% — Should I Wait It Out?

I bought a U.S. individual stock last year, and it's dropped over 30%. It feels too late to cut my losses now, but I'm scared it might fall even more if I hold on. Should I just tough it out, or sell and invest elsewhere? Has anyone been in a similar situation — how did you handle it?

I've had a similar experience. A 30% drop really hurts. I first checked whether the fundamentals of the stocks I held were still solid. If earnings and growth prospects were still good, I held on, but if they had worsened, I cut my losses and switched to other stocks. Take your time to decide.

A 30% loss is already significant, so it's natural to fear further drops. Personally, I think it's a good idea to set a stop-loss timing. For example, establishing a rule to sell unconditionally if it reaches 40% can reduce psychological burden. How about considering trimming just a portion now as part of risk management?

I was in a similar situation last year and just held on, and this year it rebounded enough for me to barely break even. But the wait was so long that it caused me a ton of stress. I don't know what stock you're holding, but if it's one with long-term recovery potential, it might be worth waiting. Just be mentally prepared for it.

What sector does that stock belong to? If it's a tech or growth stock, the volatility can make holding onto it even more painful. In my case, I switched to dividend stocks or defensive stocks, and it definitely put my mind at ease. If cutting losses hurts too much, you could sell only a portion and diversify into safer assets.

Experts say it's better to lower the average cost. The strategy is to buy more when the price drops further to lower the average, then exit when it rebounds. However, this requires additional funds and carries the risk of further declines, so you need to be careful. I've failed at this before and ended up with even bigger losses.

A 30% loss must be really frustrating. I decided to just increase my cash position. I sold some and kept an eye on the market with the rest. I think it's more important to calmly come up with a strategy rather than blindly holding on or cutting losses right now. Hang in there!
