Essential Health Checkup Items for Middle-Aged Men (Latest Guide)

After seeing my father's health checkup results, I searched around to figure out which hospital to go to. If you're a man in your 40s or older, make sure to check the following items during your medical consultation.

  • Liver function: Elevated AST and ALT levels may indicate alcoholic hepatitis. An ultrasound is also recommended.
  • Blood sugar: Fasting blood sugar of 100 or higher means prediabetes. Check post-meal blood sugar too.
  • Cholesterol: High LDL is a cardiovascular risk and may meet the criteria for taking statins.
  • PSA: Prostate-specific antigen. Testing is recommended from age 50.
  • Bone density: Men get osteoporosis too, so don't ignore it.

Also, even if your results are within the normal range, be sure to mention any family history. My father had no symptoms, but his liver levels stayed elevated, so he recently even went through a liver biopsy.

Let's not neglect our health just because we're still young.

My dad also got a checkup last year, and his PSA level came back a bit high, so he got re-tested. Luckily, it was fine, but I still feel it was good that he got tested. Bone density matters for men too. My dad was diagnosed with osteoporosis and is currently receiving treatment.

PSA is still pretty controversial, isn't it? I know the FDA doesn't recommend it for all men starting at 50 either. Because of the high false-positive rate, it can lead to unnecessary biopsies, and Western standards may not match Asian body types. Isn't unconditionally recommending it for everyone 50 and older a bit of a dangerous generalization?
