4th Place
Overview
4th place (四位, fourth place) refers to the fourth position in a competition or evaluation system that ranks participants. In sports, it is the rank immediately after 3rd place, which is the podium (medal) range, and carries great symbolic significance in that it is the highest rank that does not reach the podium. It is often described as 'first place outside the medals' and 'the most disappointing rank,' and its meaning and value are interpreted differently depending on the competition format and event.

Fourth Place in Sports
Most sports competitions award medals (gold, silver, bronze) from 1st to 3rd and exclude 4th and below from awards. For this reason, 4th place is classified as 'failure to place' on the results sheet, but at the same time it is a position that demonstrates upper-tier ability among finalists. At the Olympics, World Cup, World Championships, and other events, the gap between 4th and 3rd is often extremely small in records, so cases of '0.01 seconds' or 'one point' disappointment are frequently discussed.
Fourth-Place Match and Ranking Determination
Many tournament competitions hold a 'third-place match' in which the two teams that lost in the semifinals compete for 3rd place. On the other hand, some competitions treat the teams eliminated in the semifinals as joint 3rd place. In league formats, 4th place is determined by various tiebreakers such as points, goal difference, and head-to-head record, and in many cases qualification for cup competitions or entry into the next season is decided at 4th place.
Fourth Place in League and Ranking Systems
In professional sports leagues, 4th place is often the cutoff for playoff qualification. For example, in a structure where the top four teams advance to the postseason, 4th place has the meaning of 'the last train' and 'the boundary line.' In football, many leagues give Champions League qualification up to 4th place, so the race for 4th place unfolds fiercely throughout the season. On the other hand, it is also a unique position where the gap with 5th place becomes more important than the gap with 1st place.
Cultural and Psychological Meaning
Fourth place tends to be perceived psychologically as 'an achievement narrowly missed.' In sports psychology, the phenomenon in which 3rd place (bronze medalists) show higher satisfaction than 2nd place (silver medalists) is called the 'bronze medalist effect,' and in contrast, 4th place is sometimes studied as the rank with the lowest sense of achievement. In media and fan culture, expressions such as 'the curse of fourth place' and 'fourth place again' form discourse mixed with disparagement and sympathy.
Use in Statistics and Records
Fourth place is often set as the 'boundary between the upper and middle ranks' when analyzing rank distributions. Metrics such as average rank, rate of entering the top four, and number of semifinal appearances are used as criteria for evaluating the stability of teams and players. In addition, in esports, Go, chess, and other fields, reaching the semifinals itself is recognized as an important performance indicator.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, as the environment for sports broadcasting and data analysis has advanced, there is a trend toward reevaluating the value of fourth place. The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and continental confederations adjusted the qualification structure through the expansion and reorganization of club competitions, and in European leagues, changes in the allocation of Champions League qualification spots have made the interests surrounding the race for fourth place more complex. In esports and emerging leagues, the method of advancing the top four teams to the playoffs has become standardized, increasing the strategic importance of fourth place. In addition, as reward structures such as 'prize money up to fourth place' spread in semi-pro and amateur leagues, fourth place is establishing itself not simply as an elimination rank but as a target rank with substantive rewards at stake. Data-based prediction models are also increasingly treating the race for fourth place as a major variable.
