Account
Overview
An account (계좌; 計座, account) is a computerized unit established to record the relationship between a financial institution and a customer for the deposit, withdrawal, transfer, and settlement of funds. Going beyond a simple store of balances, it is a channel for credit, investment, pensions, and policy funds, and in the modern financial system it serves as a core identifier that constitutes an individual's economic identity. Since the spread of open banking and MyData, the nature of accounts has been expanding from a "box that holds balances" to an "interface through which data flows."
Key Details
Definition and Legal Nature
Accounts are based on a deposit contract or trust/consignment contract between a customer and a financial institution. Under the Act on Real Name Financial Transactions and Guarantee of Secrecy, real-name verification is mandatory, and if the account holder and the actual transactor differ, it may be subject to punishment. The account itself is understood not so much as an object of property rights but as a means of evidencing a claim right (right to demand return of deposits).
Types of Accounts
- Deposit-type accounts: ordinary deposits (free deposits and withdrawals), savings deposits, time deposits, installment savings, MMDA, CMA, etc. Return rates and withdrawal freedom conflict.
- Investment-type accounts: comprehensive securities accounts (consignment accounts), ISA (Individual Savings Account), pension savings, IRP, retirement pension DC/DB types.
- Policy/purpose accounts: housing subscription comprehensive savings, Youth Leap Account, Youth Future Savings, tax-exempt comprehensive savings, etc., combined with tax benefits.
- Special accounts: foreign-currency accounts, trust accounts, real-name-verified deposit/withdrawal accounts of virtual asset service providers, corporate accounts, virtual accounts for payment collection.
Account Number System
Account numbers are generally composed of bank code, branch code, product (subject) code, serial number, and check digit, and the digit structure differs by bank. In international remittances, IBAN and SWIFT/BIC codes are used in parallel. Recently, methods of using mobile phone numbers or simple remittance IDs as identifiers instead of account numbers have been spreading.
Opening Procedures and Real-Name Verification
Opening at a counter requires an ID card and a seal (or signature); non-face-to-face opening goes through ID authenticity verification, 1-won remittance authentication, other-bank account authentication, biometric authentication, etc. Minors require consent from a legal representative, and corporations require additional documents such as a certified copy of the corporate register and a certificate of seal impression. Opening multiple accounts per person is in principle free, but such accounts become subject to monitoring to prevent abnormal transactions.
Account-Related Systems
- Deposit insurance system: The Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation guarantees deposits up to the protection limit per person per financial institution.
- Account integrated management service (Account Info): Allows inquiry and cleanup of dormant accounts and hidden financial assets.
- Open banking and MyData: Account inquiry and transfers are handled in a single app, and transaction data is used with the individual's consent.
- Account switching service: Integrates and manages automatic transfers and salary transfers, lowering the cost of switching main banks.
- Suspension of payment and seizure: Accounts used for voice phishing fraud are immediately suspended from payment and may be subject to seizure by creditors.
- Security measures: OTP, security cards, biometric authentication, and fraud detection systems (FDS) are combined to block fraudulent transactions.
Economic Significance
Accounts are common infrastructure for household savings, corporate cash management, government policy fund execution, and national/local tax payments. Access to account opening is an indicator for measuring financial inclusion, and account-based data forms the basis for credit assessment and tailored financial product design.
Recent Trends
The biggest change in the account system in 2024–2025 is the discussion and legislative push to raise the deposit insurance limit. A plan to raise the per-person limit of 50 million won, maintained for 24 years since 2001, to 100 million won has been seriously discussed in the National Assembly and financial authorities and is set to take effect, and it is evaluated as a variable that could ease the concentration of deposits and preference for large banks.
The second is the routinization of mobile and non-face-to-face account opening. Account opening through internet-only banks and commercial bank apps has replaced visits to branches, and with the advancement of facial recognition and ID authenticity verification technology, the time required for opening has been shortened to a few minutes.
The third is the reorganization of asset management accounts. Expansion of the ISA contribution limit, integration of domestic stock accounts, and adjustment of pension account tax deductions have been pursued, and in 2025 youth asset-building products such as Youth Future Savings were launched, intensifying competition in policy accounts.
The fourth is the institutionalization of real-name virtual asset accounts and token securities (STO) accounts. Requirements for real-name verified deposit/withdrawal accounts have been strengthened, and on-exchange account infrastructure for issuing and distributing token securities is being prepared.
The fifth is AI-based abnormal transaction detection and voice phishing response. Systems that analyze call and transfer patterns in real time to block suspicious transactions and automate account payment suspension procedures have spread. With the advancement of MyData and open banking, a "unified account view" that manages accounts at multiple financial institutions on one screen has also become a standard feature.
