Address
Overview
An address (住所, address) is systematically assigned identifying information used to specify the location of a person, object, or facility. In physical space, it is expressed as a combination of administrative district, road name, building number, and postal code; in digital space, it serves to indicate a target on a network, such as an IP address, URL, or blockchain address. In modern society, addresses go beyond simple location notation and function as foundational infrastructure for various industries, including logistics, administration, finance, disaster response, and autonomous driving.
Key Details
Components of an Address
Generally, a physical address has a hierarchical structure. Metropolitan self-governing bodies (cities/provinces), basic self-governing bodies (cities/counties/districts), road names, building numbers (main number-subnumber), detail address (building/floor/unit), and postal code are combined in sequence. Thanks to this hierarchy, addresses can be searched and aggregated by narrowing from higher units to lower units, and they are used as primary keys for building statistical and administrative databases.
Road Name Addresses and Lot Number Addresses
Korea fully implemented road name addresses as legal addresses in 2014. Whereas lot number addresses are assigned based on land parcels, road name addresses assign numbers to buildings along roads, offering intuitive location navigation and enabling rapid location identification in emergencies such as fires and ambulance calls. However, because lot numbers are closely linked to land ownership, taxation, and registration systems, they are still listed in parallel on public registers, and an address DB for converting between the two systems is managed at the national level.
Postal Codes and the National Address Information System
Postal codes are a code system introduced to classify mail and optimize delivery routes; Korea reorganized to a five-digit national basic zone system in 2015. The National Address Information System (Road Name Address Guide System, Address Information Portal) integrates and manages address, coordinate, and entrance information for each building and provides address data to public institutions and private companies in API form. This is used as standard data for address-based services such as delivery, courier, insurance, and telecommunications.
Digital Addresses and Geocoding
Geocoding is a technology that converts text addresses into latitude and longitude coordinates, while reverse geocoding converts coordinates back into addresses. Here, the concept of 'precision addresses' that combine building entrance coordinates and floor/unit-level information, and 'national digital addresses' that integrate identification of countries, roads, buildings, and indoor spaces in line with the Internet of Things era, are spreading. For indoor spaces, indoor address systems combined with indoor positioning are being researched.
Internet Addresses (IP Addresses)
In networks, an IP address is a logical address that identifies a host. Due to the IPv4 address exhaustion problem, a transition to IPv6 is underway, and in NAT/CGNAT environments, multiple users share a single public IP, complicating log-based tracking. Domain names (URLs) are hierarchical address systems that abstract IPs into a form people can easily remember, and in blockchains, wallet addresses based on public key hashes are used.
Legal and Administrative Significance
An address serves as a reference point in legal relationships, including resident registration, elections, taxation, litigation jurisdiction, and creditor notification. The actual place of residence ('address'), the center of living ('geoso', residence), and the registered head office location of a legal entity are distinguished, and moving an address entails procedures such as a move-in report and a fixed date.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, industrial use of address data is entering full swing. First, the 'address industry' ecosystem based on road name addresses has expanded, and demand for precision address APIs has surged in delivery, mobility, real estate, and insurance. Second, for digital twins and autonomous driving, the combination of high-precision addresses at the building entrance/floor/unit level with 3D spatial information is being pursued. Third, led by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Korea Local Information Research & Development Institute, private-sector opening and standardization of national address information are progressing, with emphasis on data linkage mediated by addresses. Fourth, in the network domain, IPv6 adoption rates are steadily rising, and automation of address management (IPAM) in private networks and cloud environments has emerged as a core part of security operations. However, maintaining the accuracy of address data, protecting personal information, and confusion caused by the parallel notation of old lot numbers and road names remain unresolved challenges.
