Advertising
Overview
Advertising is a communication activity that delivers products, services, brands, corporate image, public interest messages, and the like to an unspecified large audience through paid media, and induces awareness improvement, attitude change, and further purchase, use, or behavior change. Beyond simple information delivery, it is also a social device that shapes consumers' perceptions and cultural tastes, and today it has developed into a sophisticated industry combining data analysis and artificial intelligence.

Definition and Core Elements
Advertising generally consists of five elements: advertiser, media, message, audience, and effect measurement. The advertiser sets marketing goals, an agency or production company designs the message, and the media company provides space and time. The essence of advertising lies in persuasion, and for this the AIDA model—Attention, Interest, Desire, Action—has traditionally been used.
History
Modern advertising began in earnest with the spread of print media such as newspapers and magazines. In the 20th century, with the advent of radio and television, advertising grew into a large industry combined with popular culture, and in the 1990s the emergence of internet banner ads opened the era of digital advertising. In the 2000s, search advertising and click-based billing models spread, and in the 2010s, with the spread of smartphones and social media, mobile, video, and programmatic advertising became the mainstream of the industry.
Types and Media
By media, it is divided into print advertising, broadcast advertising (TV/radio), out-of-home advertising (OOH/digital signage), digital advertising (search, display, social media, influencer, app), theater advertising, direct mail, and the like. By purpose, there are brand advertising centered on brand awareness, sales promotion advertising aimed at short-term sales, public service advertising, corporate PR advertising, political advertising, and the like. Recently, branded content and native advertising, which blur the boundary between content and advertising, are spreading rapidly.
Industry Structure and Business Models
The advertising industry consists of advertisers, advertising agencies, media companies, and research and measurement specialist companies. In the past, the commission model, which received a certain percentage of media spending, was mainstream, but recently fixed retainer methods and performance-based billing (CPA, CPI, ROAS-guaranteed) are increasing. In the digital realm, the programmatic advertising ecosystem consisting of DSP, SSP, and ad exchange, and real-time bidding (RTB) have taken hold.
Regulation and Ethics
In Korea, false, exaggerated, and deceptive advertising is prohibited under the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising, and separate restrictions apply to comparative advertising, advertising targeting children, and advertising for medical, alcoholic beverage, tobacco, and financial products. As personal information protection regulations have strengthened, the scope of data use and consent procedures for customized advertising have become important issues, and compliance with ethical standards and social responsibility are emphasized centering on advertising self-regulatory organizations.
Effect Measurement
Impressions, reach, frequency, click-through rate (CTR), conversion rate (CVR), and return on ad spend (ROAS) are used as representative metrics. Along with performance measurement centered on short-term results, methods of evaluating the effect of long-term brand equity formation by combining brand lift, changes in search volume, attribution models, and the like are spreading.
Latest Trends
The key keywords of the 2024–2025 advertising market are artificial intelligence, privacy, retail media, and short-form video. As the production of advertising creatives using generative AI and automatic optimization have become common, the cost and time of creative production have greatly decreased, and the generation of hyper-personalized messages has also become a reality. Due to third-party cookie regulations and discussions on privacy sandboxes, securing first-party data and contextual targeting have become important, and retail media combined with commerce data and connected TV (CTV) advertising are growing rapidly. Short-form platforms, live commerce, and influencer marketing remain strong, and the share of advertising containing social values such as ESG and diversity, as well as balanced strategies pursuing both performance and branding, is also growing. In Korea, the expansion of OTT and comprehensive programming channel advertising, digital out-of-home advertising, and the growth of virtual and indirect advertising (PPL) stand out.
