Age
Overview
Age is a concept that applies the amount of time elapsed since birth to human life; beyond simple time calculation, it is a core indicator that defines legal rights and obligations, social roles, and biological states. Even for the same person, different values such as full age, counting age, and year age are produced depending on the standard used, and Korea unified its legal and administrative standard to full age (만 나이) on June 28, 2023. Age is also a concept where the biological process of aging and the social customs of age norms intersect, and recently the trend of emphasizing biological age over chronological age is spreading.

Full Age, Counting Age, and Year Age
- Full age (만 나이): The international standard method that starts with age 0 on the date of birth and increases by 1 year each time a birthday passes.
- Counting age (세는나이, Korean-style age): A method that starts at age 1 at birth and adds 1 year on January 1 of each new year; it was abolished as a legal standard in 2023.
- Year age (연 나이): The value obtained by subtracting the birth year from the current year; it is still used in some statutes such as the Military Service Act and the Juvenile Protection Act.
For example, for a person born on December 31, 2000, as of January 1, 2025, full age is 24, counting age is 26, and year age is 25, so the three standards exist simultaneously.
Legal Age and Reference Point
In law, age is in principle calculated as full age in accordance with Article 4 of the Civil Act and others, and the provisions of Articles 159 through 161 of the Civil Act apply to the calculation of periods. However, the Military Service Act, the Juvenile Protection Act, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, and others have used year age. The age of 14 as the standard for criminal responsibility (Article 9 of the Criminal Act), under 19 as the standard for application of the Juvenile Act, 18 for voting rights, and 15 as the minimum working age under the Labor Standards Act show that age becomes a decisive line separating rights and obligations.
Biological Age and Aging
Whereas chronological age measures the passage of time, biological age is measured through DNA methylation, telomere length, organ function, chronic inflammation indicators, and the like. The epigenetic clock shows that individual differences are very large even at the same chronological age. Aging is explained as the result of a complex interplay of accumulated damage at the cellular level, decreased protein homeostasis, and declined stem cell function.
Age, Society, and Culture
In Korean and other East Asian societies, age is strongly intertwined with honorifics, forms of address, and hierarchical order. On the other hand, Western societies tend to value roles and achievements more than age, and recently the discourse of an "ageless society" that rejects fixing roles according to age is spreading. As aging progresses, discussions on the proportion of the working-age population, the old-age dependency ratio, extension of the retirement age, and reemployment have established themselves as key social issues surrounding age.
Pitfalls of Age Calculation
Leap years (birth on February 29), births at the end of a month, time zone differences, and calendars other than the Gregorian calendar (lunar calendar, fiscal year) are representative factors that cause confusion in age calculation. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO 8601) stipulates the format for denoting periods but does not stipulate the rules for calculating age itself.
