Air Show
Overview
An air show (에어쇼) is a public event that showcases the flight capabilities and technological prowess of various aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other flying vehicles. It is usually held at air force bases or airports, where civilian and military pilots introduce the latest aircraft and perform high-difficulty aerobatic maneuvers. Beyond mere entertainment, it also functions as a platform for fostering the aviation industry, demonstrating national defense capabilities, and promoting international exchange. An air show is a meeting of science, technology, and art set against the sky, offering spectators awe and inspiration.

History and Origins
The origins of air shows began with the advancement of aviation technology in the early 1900s. The International Aviation Meeting held in Reims, France, in 1909 is recorded as the first large-scale air show. Afterward, through two world wars, military aircraft developed significantly, and in the postwar period, air shows held at air force bases for the public to see pilots' skills and aircraft became established. In particular, the advent of jet fighters made air shows even more dynamic and spectacular.
Composition and Programs of Air Shows
Typical air show programs are broadly divided into ground displays and flight demonstrations. In ground displays, the latest civilian airliners, military transport aircraft, fighter jets, helicopters, and drones are exhibited, allowing visitors to look inside the aircraft or interview pilots. Flight demonstrations include solo high-speed maneuvers, formation flying, and aerial acrobatics. In particular, famous aerobatic teams such as the Blue Angels (USA), the Red Arrows (UK), France's Patrouille de France, and the Republic of Korea Air Force's Black Eagles appear and perform thrilling stunts. Recently, performances by civilian professional pilots flying seaplanes or sports aircraft with great agility have also gained popularity.
Major Air Shows
Among the world's most renowned air shows are the Paris Air Show in France, where new aircraft such as the Airbus A380 are unveiled; the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom; and the Dubai Airshow in the United Arab Emirates. These events are primarily business-oriented for industry professionals and are opened to the general public on the final day. In addition, the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in the United States is a large-scale festival attended by private aviation enthusiasts from around the world, and the ILA Berlin Air Show in Germany and Russia's MAKS Air Show are also important. In South Korea, the Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX), held every October at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, along with the air force air show held in conjunction with it, is representative.
Safety and Operations
Air shows are high-risk events subject to strict safety regulations. Flight demonstrations are conducted under certain altitude and speed limits, and a safe distance from the audience must be ensured. Air traffic control, weather conditions, and aircraft inspections are essential. Although accidents have occurred in the past, the introduction of advanced radar and communication systems in recent years has greatly reduced safety incidents.
Latest Trends
Air shows in 2024–2025 are making carbon neutrality and the transition to eco-friendly aircraft major trends. As the aviation industry develops electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) and hydrogen fuel cell aircraft, demonstration flights of these aircraft are drawing great attention at air shows around the world. The scale of air shows in Asia and the Middle East is rapidly growing, and new unmanned aerial vehicle demonstration programs such as drone light shows have also emerged. In addition, following the COVID-19 pandemic, hybrid formats combining online broadcasting have spread, allowing audiences who cannot visit the venue to enjoy air shows in real time. In South Korea, the demonstration flight of the Korean fighter jet KF-21 was unveiled at ADEX 2024, boosting national pride, and in 2025, a complex content-type air show combined with an international space exhibition is planned.
