Early Life and Background
Alexandra Eala was born on June 14, 2002, in Bucharest, Romania. From a young age, she showed exceptional athleticism, and at age 14 she discovered her talent for high jump during a school physical education class and began athletics in earnest. She initially combined sprinting and long jump, but soon concentrated on high jump and began to stand out. Under the guidance of legendary Romanian high jump coach Grigore Cala, she underwent systematic training.
Career Progression
Eala first earned recognition on the international stage at the 2018 World Youth Championships in Athletics. She then emerged by taking second place at the 2021 European U23 Championships, and at the 2022 Munich European Championships she cleared 1.98m to win silver, signalling her arrival at major competitions. At the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships, she placed fifth with 1.96m, and at the 2024 European Championships she cleared 2.00m, breaking the two-metre barrier for the first time.
Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics
Her greatest glory came at the 2024 Paris Olympics. In the final, Eala successfully cleared 2.02m, setting a new personal best. That mark was also the best in Romanian women's high jump history, and she reached the Olympic summit, giving Romania its first athletics gold medal since 2008. In particular, the victory was all the more valuable as it came against a stellar field that included world record holder Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine and European champion Angelina Topić of Serbia.
