Apgujeong
Overview
Apgujeong (狎鷗亭) is a legal dong and administrative dong (Apgujeong-dong) located at the northwestern edge of Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on the south bank of the Han River. The place name originates from 'Apgujeong,' a pavilion built by Han Myeonghoe (한명회), who served as yeonguijeong during the reign of King Sejo of Joseon, near the Han River; it carries the meaning 'close to the seagulls.' Today, it is widely known as one of Seoul's representative affluent neighborhoods and lifestyle centers, dense with high-end residential complexes, fashion and beauty commercial districts, and large department stores.

Origin and History of the Place Name
'Apgu (狎鷗)' means to be close to seagulls, a phrase expressing the ideal of a scholar who leaves behind worldly interests and lives as a friend of nature. Han Myeonghoe built a pavilion in this area and named it Apgujeong; the pavilion was lost to war and other events, and only its site remains today, but the place name was passed down and became the name of the dong. Until the 1960s, this area was merely a small village along the Han River, but as the Han River Comprehensive Development and large-scale residential land development proceeded in the 1970s, the Apgujeong Hyundai Apartment complex was completed in 1976, and the area was transformed into one of Seoul's representative high-end residential districts.
Geography and Transportation
Apgujeong-dong borders Cheongdam-dong to the east, Sinsa-dong to the west, and Nonhyeon-dong to the south, and faces Yongsan-gu across the Han River to the north. With Apgujeong Station on Subway Line 3 and Apgujeong Rodeo Station on the Suin–Bundang Line, it has excellent access to the Gangnam business district and the city center. Thanks to its location, which offers Han River Park's Apgujeong section and views of Namsan and the Han River, residential preference is very high.
Housing and Real Estate
Apgujeong-dong is an area where large apartment complexes built in the 1970s and high-end villas are mixed; combining Han River views, school districts, and the Gangnam living area, it is considered one of the areas leading Seoul apartment prices. Older complexes, including Apgujeong Hyundai Apartment phases 1–6, have pursued redevelopment for years, and discussions continue over project feasibility, floor area ratio, and Han River waterfront scenic regulations.
Commercial District and Culture
Apgujeong Rodeo Street is a fashion and culture street created in the mid-1990s, densely lined with distinctive select shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants. The Galleria Department Store Luxury Hall and the Hyundai Department Store Apgujeong Main Store are symbolic spaces of luxury consumption in Korea, and the Sinsa-dong area adjacent to Dosan Park is home to beauty clinics such as plastic surgery, dermatology, and hair salons. It also has a history of housing entertainment agency offices, including SM Entertainment in the past, giving it deep ties to popular culture.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, the biggest topic in the Apgujeong area is undoubtedly redevelopment. As project implementation approvals and relocation and demolition procedures proceed in stages in major zones such as Apgujeong Districts 2, 3, and 5, prospects are emerging that high-rise mixed-use residential complexes will be built along the Han River. The pace of projects appears to be accelerating as the Rapid Integrated Planning initiative and discussions on easing Han River waterfront development regulations intersect. In the commercial district, pop-up stores and experiential stores from luxury and K-beauty brands have opened one after another, increasing floating population among the MZ generation, and the Apgujeong Rodeo area is establishing itself as a domestic launch base for global brands. However, concerns are also raised about gentrification, rising rents, and changes in identity.
