Axis of Resistance

An anti-Israel, anti-US armed network centered on Iran that unites Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, Iraqi militias, and others.

Axis of Resistance

Overview

The Axis of Resistance (Persian: محور مقاومت, Arabic: محور المقاومة) is an informal military and political network combining Iran-aligned armed groups and political organizations in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, and elsewhere, with Iran at its center. They share the cause of opposing Israeli, American, and Western intervention in the Middle East, and are characterized by the provision of weapons, funding, and training by the Quds Force under Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Because it is not a formal alliance treaty or an integrated command structure but rather a loose solidarity body, the term "axis" was attached.

Key Details

Origins and Background of Formation

The roots of the Axis of Resistance go back to the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution. The revolutionary government made an anti-Western, anti-Israel line the core of its foreign policy, and with Israel's 1982 invasion of Lebanon as the catalyst, it supported the founding of Hezbollah. Afterward, through a strategic alliance with the Syrian Assad regime, support for Palestinian armed groups, and the fostering of Shia militias after the 2003 Iraq War, the network expanded. From the mid-2000s, the term "Axis of Resistance" began to be used in earnest.

Main Constituent Forces

  • Hezbollah (Lebanon): A Shia armed political faction founded in 1982. It has experience in all-out war with Israel and is a core axis possessing formidable rocket and missile capabilities.
  • Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ): Sunni armed organizations operating from the Gaza Strip that receive Iranian support. Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel is assessed as a representative military action of this axis.
  • Houthi rebels (Yemen): Officially named "Ansar Allah." From late 2023, they carried out attacks on Red Sea shipping, dealing a direct blow to international logistics.
  • Iraqi Shia militias: Includes many forces affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), such as Kata'ib Hezbollah and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq.
  • Syrian Assad regime: Until its collapse in December 2024, it served as a logistics and supply route linking Iran, Hezbollah, and Lebanon.

Ideology and Strategy

The ideological spectrum among members ranges from Shia Islamism to Sunni armed struggle to secular Arab nationalism. The common thread binding them is the political slogan of "resistance against Israel and the United States." Strategically, they simultaneously pursue asymmetric warfare (rockets, drones, guerrilla warfare), proxy war, and the expansion of political influence through factions in each country.

Latest Trends

After Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, the Axis of Resistance expanded into a multi-front structure. Hezbollah and Israel waged large-scale fighting in 2024, and the Houthis shocked global shipping with their Red Sea blockade operation. In April and October 2024, Iran and Israel carried out direct mutual attacks for the first time in history, heightening the risk of escalation.

In September 2024, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike, and in December of the same year the Syrian Assad regime collapsed, greatly weakening the axis's logistical network. Entering 2025, Israel is managing the Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen fronts in parallel while continuing military pressure on Iran's nuclear facilities. The United States has strengthened sanctions on Iran's oil exports, and within Iran the debate over whether to develop nuclear weapons has reignited. Israeli-Houthi exchanges, Iraqi militia attacks on US bases, and regional realignment following the normalization of Iran-Saudi relations are cited as major points of interest. Analyses that the axis has entered a phase of collapse and analyses that it will instead survive through dispersal and reorganization are being raised simultaneously.
