Bae State

Overview

Bae State (裵國) was a small vassal state that existed during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods of China. It is estimated to have been located mainly in the area of present-day Shaanxi Province (陝西省), and its existence is confirmed in historical records related to the origin of surnames. Bae State failed to maintain independent power among its powerful neighbors and was eventually annexed by the Chu state (楚國). After the fall of Bae State, its people adopted Bae (裵) as their surname, which continues to this day.

Location and Territory

There are various theories about the exact location of Bae State, but it is generally estimated to have been in the southern part of Shaanxi Province, particularly in the area of present-day Weinan City (渭南市). Some scholars suggest that Bae State was located in the Wei River (渭水) basin, a tributary of the Yellow River (黃河). This region was under strong influence from the Qin (秦) and Jin (晉) states during the Spring and Autumn period, making it difficult for Bae State, a small state, to survive among these powerful entities.

Historical Background

The earliest record of Bae State can be found in Sima Qian's (司馬遷) "Records of the Grand Historian" (史記). According to the Records, Bae State was one of the eastern vassals of the Zhou (周) dynasty and is said to have had blood relations with the Zhou royal family. However, detailed records of its specific lineage or reign period have not survived. Bae State maintained its existence until the mid-to-late Spring and Autumn period, but as the Warring States period began, it was absorbed into Chu's expansionist policies.

Annexation by Chu

Around the 4th century BCE, as Chu intensified its advance into the Central Plains, Bae State faced military pressure from Chu. During the reign of King Wu (武王) or King Zhuang (莊王) of Chu, Bae State was conquered, and its territory was incorporated into Chu's Nanyang (南陽) region. After the last ruler of Bae State surrendered to Chu, his descendants adopted Bae (裵) as their surname and became subjects of Chu.

Origin of the Surname Bae (裵)

After the fall of Bae State, the displaced people began using Bae (裵) as their surname, derived from the name of the state. This follows a common practice in Chinese surname origins, known as "taking the state name as the surname" (以國爲氏). The Bae surname later spread throughout China, becoming particularly concentrated in the Shaanxi and Henan (河南省) regions. The Korean Bae (裵) clan is also known to have originated from this Chinese Bae State, and the founder of the Korean Bae clan is traditionally said to be Bae Jita (裵祗沱), who came from Tang China to Silla.

Cultural Legacy

As a small state, Bae State did not leave behind a significant independent cultural legacy. However, after its people were incorporated into Chu, they are presumed to have left some regional characteristics through cultural fusion with Chu. Additionally, the process of Bae State's fall is frequently cited in historical academia as a typical example of the fate of small states during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods.

Recent Trends

As of 2024–2025, archaeological research on Bae State remains limited. However, there have been reports of some bronze artifacts related to Bae State discovered during excavations in the Shaanxi Province area. Notably, in 2023, a bronze tripod (鼎) inscribed with the character '裵' was excavated from an ancient tomb in Weinan City, Shaanxi Province, drawing academic attention. This artifact is considered important material evidence supporting the existence of Bae State. Additionally, with the advancement of digital history, attempts are being made to reconstruct the geographical location and territory of Bae State using GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Chinese historians are building a database of small states from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, including Bae State, which is expected to contribute to future research.
