Barcelona

Capital of Catalonia in Spain and a leading cultural, tourist, and economic city on the Mediterranean coast

Barcelona

Overview

Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous community of Catalonia in northeastern Spain, located on the Mediterranean coast with a population of about 1.6 million (about 5 million in the metropolitan area), making it Spain's second-largest city. It is one of Europe's leading global cities, combining Modernista architecture including that of Gaudí, the medieval heritage of the Gothic Quarter, a strong industrial and startup ecosystem, and sports culture represented by FC Barcelona. The official languages are Catalan and Spanish, and Catalan identity forms a core axis of the city's identity.

Geography and History

Barcelona lies on the Mediterranean coast of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula, between the Pyrenees and the Ebro River. It began as the Roman colony of Barcino in the 1st century AD, and in the Middle Ages flourished as a center of Mediterranean trade alongside the Kingdom of Aragon. During the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, it grew into Spain's largest industrial city based on the textile industry, and during this period the Eixample district was expanded. The 1888 and 1929 Universal Expositions and the 1992 Summer Olympics were decisive turning points for urban regeneration.

Culture and Arts

Antoni Gaudí's Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà, and Park Güell are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) retains Roman walls and medieval churches, and there is also a wealth of modern art spaces such as the Picasso Museum, the Miró Foundation, and the MACBA Collection. Along with Catalan Modernisme architecture, traditional culture such as Sant Jordi's Day, the La Mercè festival, castells (human towers), and sardana continues.

Economy and Industry

Barcelona is a key axis of the Spanish economy, with developed automobile (SEAT), pharmaceutical, chemical, design, tourism, and ICT industries. The 22@ innovation district is a representative example of converting an old industrial area into a digital and bio cluster, and it is counted among Europe's most active cities for startups. The Port of Barcelona is a leading Mediterranean cruise and logistics hub, and El Prat Airport is a major European hub. Hosting international exhibitions and conferences, including Mobile World Congress (MWC), also accounts for a large share.

Sports

FC Barcelona is a world-class football club that plays at Camp Nou (under reconstruction) and has produced Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, and others through the La Masia youth academy. Its multi-sports club system, including basketball, handball, and roller hockey, is also strong. The Montjuïc area, developed as a legacy of the 1992 Olympics, still functions as major sports infrastructure, and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya hosts the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

Tourism and Urban Life

La Rambla, La Boqueria Market, Montjuïc Hill, and Barceloneta Beach are representative attractions. With a Mediterranean climate that is mild year-round, the tourist high season is long, and among major European cities, the share of tourists per capita is very high. At the same time, rising housing costs and tourism overcrowding have long been subjects of social debate.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, responding to overtourism is Barcelona's biggest topic. City authorities announced they will phase out short-term rental (tourist apartment) licenses by 2028, and in 2024 large-scale anti-tourism protests took place. Meanwhile, the 2024 America's Cup yacht race held in Barcelona promoted port redevelopment and investment in marine sports infrastructure. The Sagrada Família is under construction of its central tower with the goal of completion in 2026, and in 2025 major structures such as the Tower of Jesus entered the final stages. FC Barcelona has been carrying out the Camp Nou renovation (Espai Barça) in stages and expanded capacity in 2025, regaining competitiveness in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Economically, AI and deep-tech startup investment is increasing around the 22@ district, and at MWC 2025, AI and 6G were key agenda items. For climate response, the expansion of superblocks (Superilla) and implementation of low-emission zones continue.
