Billiard Hall

Overview

A billiard hall is an indoor sports and leisure facility equipped with billiard tables where people can enjoy billiards. Cues, billiard balls, chalk, tables, etc. are provided as basic equipment, and disciplines such as four-ball (sagu), three-cushion, pocket billiards (8-ball and 9-ball), and snooker are mainly played. In Korea, it enjoyed its heyday in the 1980s–90s in a form combined with neighborhood regular shops, and since the 2000s it has been reevaluated as a sport centered on three-cushion, becoming more upscale, and recently as an indoor date and hobby space.

Facility Composition

A typical billiard hall consists of a hall with multiple billiard tables, a counter, a waiting area, and a beverage/snack corner. Large venues divide areas by discipline and have systems that individually control scoreboards and lighting. Recently, ventilation, air conditioning, and noise-reduction design have become important, and some high-end billiard halls operate as individual rooms (private rooms).

Disciplines and Rules

  • Four-ball (sagu): A format using four balls in which one must hit the opponent's ball and one's own ball together; it is the most widely popular discipline in Korea.
  • Three-cushion: A format in which the cue ball must contact three cushions before touching two object balls to score; it is the representative discipline that has become an internationally recognized sport.
  • Pocket billiards: A format in which balls are potted into six pockets, including 8-ball and 9-ball, and it is popular among adolescents and young people.
  • Snooker: A discipline originating in the United Kingdom, using a large table and many balls.

Usage

In the past, the 'hourly rate system,' in which users paid an hourly fee and freely enjoyed games, was common. Recently, settlement based on number of games, memberships, and app-based reservations/payments have been introduced, increasing convenience. Establishments that operate lesson programs for beginners or amateur leagues are also increasing.

Social and Cultural Significance

Billiard halls have long been a social space for local residents and a core part of the small-scale leisure industry. In the 1980s–90s, 'neighborhood billiard halls' were playgrounds for both adolescents and adults, and indoor smoking and long-stay culture also formed. Later, they experienced a downturn due to stronger regulations, changes in smoking culture, and the rise of alternative leisure activities such as PC cafés and mobile games.

Latest Trends

As of 2024–2025, the billiard hall industry is in a clear phase of restructuring.

First, sportification and professionalization are accelerating. Three-cushion has established itself as broadcast and streaming content centered on international tournaments and professional leagues, and the performances of famous players are attracting new user groups. Accordingly, establishments that have introduced automatic scoring, match video broadcasting, and online ranking systems are increasing.

Second, upscaling and premiumization are underway. 'Aesthetic billiard halls' that invest in lighting and interiors are gaining popularity as date courses for younger people, and complex leisure spaces combined with cafés have also appeared.

Third, unmanned and smart operations are spreading. Small establishments that introduce unmanned payment kiosks, app reservations, and remote control systems to reduce labor costs and improve late-night accessibility are increasing.

Fourth, in terms of regulation and safety management, standards related to youth access, smoking, and ventilation have been strengthened. As consumer expectations for hygiene and safety rise, regular equipment inspections and air quality management are becoming factors in establishment competitiveness.

Fifth, changes in local commercial districts are also clear. While small billiard halls in traditional alley commercial districts are decreasing, billiard halls within large franchises and complex cultural facilities are increasing, showing polarization.
