Busan Port
Overview
Busan Port (부산항) is South Korea's largest trade port, located in Busan Metropolitan City (부산광역시), and a global hub port whose annual container throughput ranks among the highest in the world. Situated at the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula, it has the geographical advantage of connecting Pacific shipping routes with the Eurasian continent and serves as the logistics gateway for the national economy. Having shared modern and contemporary history since its opening in 1876, Busan Port now consists of a multifunctional port group including North Port (북항), New Port (신항), and Gamcheon Port (감천항).

History and Development
Busan Port was opened in 1876 for trade with Japan following the Treaty of Ganghwa (강화도 조약), and grew into a core base for South Korea's imports and exports through the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War. It expanded rapidly along with export-led economic development policies in the 1960s and 1970s, and in the 1990s construction of Busan New Port was promoted in response to increasing container cargo volumes. With the partial opening of New Port in 2006, a dual system with the existing North Port was established, and port infrastructure continues to be expanded.
Facilities and Infrastructure
Busan Port is largely divided into North Port, New Port, and Gamcheon Port. North Port is an old downtown port adjacent to the city center, handling passenger and cruise terminals and general cargo functions, and is being transformed into waterfront space through redevelopment. New Port has world's largest-scale dedicated container terminals and accommodates ultra-large vessels with berthing facilities 18–23 m deep. Gamcheon Port handles diverse cargo such as seafood, miscellaneous goods, and automobiles, and is a logistics base linked to international passenger ships. The Busan Port Authority (BPA; 부산항만공사) oversees operations, and major terminals are managed through a mixed system involving private operators.
Economic Role
Busan Port handles more than about 70% of South Korea's total container throughput and serves as the backbone of the nation's import-export logistics. In particular, with abundant transshipment cargo involving China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, it holds a position as a logistics hub in Northeast Asia. Port-related industries account for a large share of the Busan regional economy, and logistics, distribution, and manufacturing companies are clustered in the hinterland complexes. It is also attracting attention for its potential as a forward base for the Arctic route era.
Major Challenges and Competition
Amid fierce competition with Singapore, Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, and others, Busan Port continues marketing and service improvements to attract transshipment cargo. Redevelopment of the aging North Port, expansion of the New Port hinterland, and improvement of connecting transportation networks are major pending issues. Environmental problems such as fine dust and noise, the aging of the port labor force, and job changes resulting from the transition to automation are also cited as tasks to be addressed.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, Busan Port is accelerating its transition to a smart port and the construction of an eco-friendly port. Automated container terminals have been introduced at New Port, where remotely controlled cranes and unmanned transport vehicles are operated, and expansion of fully automated terminals is being pursued through 2025. It is also preparing a supply base for eco-friendly fuels such as LNG and ammonia to respond to decarbonization regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The North Port redevelopment project opened some sections in 2024 and is being transformed into citizen-friendly space, and efforts are being made to attract home ports to revitalize the cruise industry. Meanwhile, as transshipment cargo volatility increases amid global supply chain reorganization and the US-China trade conflict, Busan Port is seeking strategies to strengthen connectivity with emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and India.
