Cheongna Dome Era

A term referring to the period in which Incheon's professional baseball infrastructure is being reorganized with the construction of a dome stadium in Cheongna International City, Incheon.

Cheongna Dome Era

Overview

The Cheongna Dome Era is a term that emerged as a project to build a dome-type baseball stadium (dome stadium) in the Cheongna International City area of Seo-gu, Incheon, and refers to the transition period in which the center of Incheon professional baseball's infrastructure shifts from the existing Munhak Baseball Stadium (Incheon SSG Landers Field) to the Cheongna Dome Stadium. It carries meaning beyond a simple new stadium construction in that it is an attempt to overcome the limitations of an open-air stadium and aim for year-round games without rain cancellations, large-scale spectator capacity, and transformation into a complex cultural space. During the project's promotion, issues such as financing methods, preferential treatment controversies, and transportation infrastructure linkage have also come to the fore, establishing it as a major pending issue in Incheon's local politics and economy.

Main Details

Background: Limitations of the Munhak Baseball Stadium System

Incheon baseball has continued as the home stadium of SK Wyverns after the opening of Munhak Baseball Stadium in 2002, and then SSG Landers, founded in 2021. Due to its location adjacent to the sea, Munhak Baseball Stadium has frequent strong winds and rain cancellations, and facility aging and lack of spectator convenience facilities have been continuously pointed out. In 2020, when Shinsegae Group acquired SK Wyverns and launched SSG Landers, and in 2022 when it reached its peak in popularity with an integrated championship, discussions on a new stadium combining the parent company's capital strength and Incheon City's urban development plan began in earnest.

Location: Cheongna International City

Cheongna International City is an international business and residential complex new town connecting Incheon International Airport and western Seoul, and has large-scale idle land and plans to expand the metropolitan transportation network, so it has been mentioned as a dome stadium site. Unlike the eastern part of the Incheon urban center where Munhak Baseball Stadium is located, it is evaluated as an advantage that it becomes a base facility capable of driving development in the western region.

Project Structure and Progress

Incheon Metropolitan City has been reviewing methods to attract private capital (private investment projects such as BTO and BOT or private proposal-type) to reduce the burden on public finances. In this process, the project schedule was adjusted several times as operator recruitment, selection of preferred negotiating partners, negotiation breakdowns, and re-announcements were repeated. The club has continuously expressed its will to build a dome stadium, but differences in position between the city and the club over cost sharing and the scope of operating rights remain key variables.

Key Issues

  • Financing and preferential treatment controversy: Civic groups and local councils have repeatedly pointed out that attracting private capital could lead to large-scale licensing privileges.
  • Transportation and environment: Expansion of metropolitan and urban railways and road networks to handle spectator movement concentrated at game ending times is presented as a prerequisite task.
  • Original downtown commercial district: Discussions have proceeded in parallel on the possibility of shrinkage of the commercial district near Munhak Baseball Stadium and balanced regional development.
  • League schedule: Dome stadiums have no rain cancellations, so they also affect KBO League schedule organization and player management methods.

Ripple Effects

Since Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome, which opened in 2015, was practically the only dome stadium in the KBO League, if the Cheongna Dome is completed, it will become the league's second dome stadium and a new baseball base in the western Seoul metropolitan area. Linked development plans such as complex cultural and commercial facilities, hotels, and convention centers centered on the stadium are also being discussed.

Latest Trends

Since 2024, Incheon City has brought the Cheongna Dome Stadium project back into public discussion and resumed private operator recruitment and negotiation procedures, while reviewing condition easing and incentive adjustments to secure project feasibility. In 2025, discussions among the city, the club, and the local council over the project promotion method and schedule are continuing, and a site feasibility review linked to the expansion of the metropolitan transportation network is also being conducted in parallel. Across the KBO League, in a trend of accelerating competition for new stadium construction and remodeling, the Cheongna Dome is evaluated as a key project that will determine the mid- to long-term competitiveness of Incheon baseball.
