Chiikawa

A popular Japanese character manga and anime by Nagano that, behind its cute art style, captures the realities of labor and survival.

Chiikawa

Overview

Chiikawa (ちいかわ) is a manga serialized on X (formerly Twitter) since 2020 by the Japanese illustrator and manga artist Nagano (ナガノ), as well as an anime series based on it. Its official title is 『Chiikawa: Something Small and Cute』 (ちいかわ なんか小さくてかわいいやつ), and it tells the story of small, cute animal-like characters who take on part-time jobs and qualification exams in order to live their daily lives. Despite its cute art style, it depicts the hardships of labor, economic pressure, and both the warmth and loss of human relationships, gaining explosive popularity not only in Japan but across Asia, including Korea, China, and Taiwan.

Origins and History

Nagano originally worked as an illustrator and was known for works such as 『Javier』 and for character goods design. In January 2020, Nagano began posting short four-panel comics featuring the Chiikawa character on their X account, and these spread by word of mouth and were published as a tankobon. In 2021, official serialization began in Kodansha's Morning, and in April 2022 the anime was broadcast as a corner within Fuji TV's 'Mezamashi TV' anime program, securing broad public recognition.

Characters

At the center of the work are three protagonists. The protagonist Chiikawa is a small creature who is timid and tearful but kind-hearted, and who always takes on new certifications. Hachiware is a cheerful, cat-like friend who mainly does odd-job part-time work to earn living expenses. Usagi (the rabbit) is a being who always makes the strange sound 'Ura' and acts unpredictably, serving as the story's savior through strong physical ability and sudden feats. In addition, supporting characters such as the ferocious trainer (Yamada), monsters, and 'Kinta' appear and add tension to the world.

Worldview and Themes

On the surface it is a healing-style cute character work, but its actual content is quite dark and realistic. The characters mow grass, work at shops, and deal with dangerous monsters for small rewards in order to survive in a world into which they have been 'suddenly thrown.' The work metaphorically reveals capitalist labor exploitation, inequality, and qualification competition for survival, while never losing the warm solidarity of friends sharing meals and worrying about one another. This 'duality of cuteness and cruelty' is cited as a key reason readers are so enthusiastic about it.

Media Expansion and Commercial Performance

The tankobon's cumulative print run has exceeded millions of copies, and the anime has been produced across multiple seasons. Commercial expansion has been very active, including character merchandise, collaboration cafes, convenience store goods, and clothing brand collaborations, and in Japan 'Chiikawa mimicry' culture has become a social phenomenon. In Korea as well, it has gained great popularity and formed a fandom through KakaoTalk emoticons, pop-up stores, toy sales, and more.

Recent Trends

Since 2024, Chiikawa has expanded beyond a simple character boom into a cultural brand. News related to a new anime season and a theatrical film has continued, and the original serialization is steadily ongoing; in Korea, long queues whenever large pop-up stores and theme cafes open have become commonplace. As of 2025, it records one of the leading sales scales among Japanese-origin character IPs in the global merchandise market, and collaborations with fashion, beauty, and food-and-beverage brands are increasing further. At the same time, the work's distinctive narrative of 'labor and survival' continues to resonate with younger generations feeling social fatigue, and it is evaluated not as simple consumption of cuteness but as content reflecting a generational sensibility. Within the fandom, interpretations and discussions of the original work's dark developments and character-loss narratives are also active.
