Choi Won-ho
Overview
Choi Won-ho (최원호) is a former infielder and baseball manager who worked in the KBO League of South Korea. As a player, he played for the Hanwha Eagles as a utility infielder, and after retirement he served as a coach and manager for his parent club, Hanwha. From 2022 to 2024, he led the Hanwha Eagles as manager, overseeing the development of young players and the team's rebuilding effort.
Key Details
Playing Career
Choi Won-ho debuted in professional baseball in the mid-1990s after joining the Hanwha Eagles. Despite his not-tall frame, he faithfully carried out the role of a backup infielder for the team with stable defense and tenacious play. As a multi-position player capable of covering first base, second base, third base, and shortstop, he gave managers a wide range of options, and he took on various duties the team needed, including defensive replacement, pinch running, and executing plays. He is evaluated as a player whose strengths were team play and fundamentals rather than flashy star quality, and he spent much of his playing career with Hanwha.
Coaching Career
After retiring as an active player, Choi Won-ho entered coaching and joined the Hanwha Eagles coaching staff. He gained hands-on field experience by serving in various roles, including defensive coach, strategy coach, and base-running coach, and he also handled prospect development for the Futures (second) team. Building on his multi-position experience as a player, he showed strengths in defensive instruction and detailed strategic coaching, and he earned trust within the coaching staff through his ability to communicate with players. During his time as a second-team coach, he focused on raising young players' fundamentals and game-management abilities.
Managerial Career
In the 2022 season, when manager Carlos Subero (카를로스 수베로) was dismissed due to poor results, Choi Won-ho took over the team as interim manager and was later appointed full-time manager. He set aggressive base running, proactive strategy, and bold use of young players as the team's identity. In the early days of his tenure, he focused on refreshing the atmosphere of the squad and giving rookie-level players consistent opportunities to play, laying the foundation for rebuilding. In 2023, young core players such as Noh Si-hwan (노시환) and Moon Dong-ju (문동주) grew, and the team's power hitting and pitching improved, which became a stepping stone for the team to secure mid-table competitiveness.
However, in the early part of the 2024 season, the team recorded results below expectations, leading to a change at the helm, and Choi Won-ho stepped down from the managerial position. Veteran manager Kim Kyung-moon (김경문) was appointed as his successor and took charge of the team. During his managerial tenure, he tried to balance the two tasks of results and player development, and he is evaluated as having made a certain contribution to creating the team's generational-change flow.
Recent Developments
As of 2024–2025, after leaving the Hanwha Eagles managerial post, Choi Won-ho has been broadening his scope of activities to include baseball commentary and broadcasting work, as well as advisory work related to youth and amateur baseball. Across the KBO League, managerial changes are becoming more frequent, and in line with the growing demand for commentators with backgrounds as young coaches, his analytical work drawing on field experience is drawing attention. Meanwhile, the Hanwha Eagles continue the task of pursuing both short-term results and player development under the Kim Kyung-moon system, and whether the young players used during Choi Won-ho's time grow into league mainstays remains an important indicator for future evaluations. Amid the trend of professional baseball managerial appointments being rapidly reorganized around performance, how the career path of development-oriented young managers will take hold is also a point of interest.
