One of Korea's oldest marathon races, first held in 1946, it is Chuncheon's signature international marathon, run along the lakeside course of Uiamho in Gangwon-do.

Chuncheon Marathon

Overview

Chuncheon Marathon is an international-scale road marathon held every autumn (usually in late October) in Chuncheon, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province. The first race is known to have been held in 1946, and it is regarded as one of the oldest marathons in Korea, maintaining its lineage even amid the turmoil before and after the Korean War. Thanks to its flat lakeside course around Uiamho (의암호) and Gongjicheon (공지천) and the autumn foliage scenery, it has earned the nickname "the most beautiful marathon course" and is also well known as a course favorable for fast times.

Main Details

History

  • Beginnings: It is said to have started in 1946 centered on sportspeople in the Chuncheon area, and afterward established itself as a major event in Korean athletics.
  • Development: Through the 1980s and 1990s, it strengthened its character as a citizen-participation festival, and in the 2000s it introduced an internationally standardized course and an electronic chip timing system.
  • Suspension and resumption: The event was canceled or scaled down due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and normal hosting resumed around 2022.

Event Structure and Categories

It generally operates with a full course (42.195 km), half course, 10 km, and 5 km (citizen/family section), with categories adjusted according to the size of the event. It runs both an invited elite athletes section and a general amateur runners section, and finishers are awarded an official finisher's certificate and medal.

Course Characteristics

  • Start/finish: A loop-and-out-and-back course starting from Chuncheon Sports Complex (춘천종합운동장) (or the nearby Gongjicheon area).
  • Main sections: Sections connecting Gongjicheon, the Uiamho lakeside road, the direction of Uiam Dam (의암댐), and the Soyanggang (소양강) area; there are gentle ups and downs, but the course is generally flat, making it easy to maintain pace.
  • Environment: Roads running along the lake, autumn foliage, and riverside bicycle paths combine to give it appeal as a tourism-oriented marathon. However, vehicle control and deployment of safety personnel are essential in some sections.

Participation Scale and Operations

Tens of thousands of amateur runners from Korea and abroad apply for the event, and registration is often first-come, first-served and closes early. Chuncheon City, the Korea Association of Athletics Federations, local sports associations, and volunteer organizations cooperate to handle traffic control, water and food stations, medical support, and section-by-section cutoff times. The full-course time limit is usually announced at around five hours.

Local Economic and Cultural Effects

During the event, lodging, restaurants, and transportation use surge, creating direct special demand for local businesses. Promotions linked to Chuncheon local foods such as dakgalbi (닭갈비) and makguksu (막국수) are carried out together, and in step with the expansion of the running population, family-oriented tourism participation is increasing.

Latest Trends

As of 2024–2025, with the continuing running boom in Korea, the competition rate for Chuncheon Marathon registration has risen significantly, and both the full and half courses clearly tend to close early in the opening period. The organizers are strengthening electronic timing systems, expanding medical personnel by section for participant safety, and reinforcing water supply and heatstroke prevention measures in preparation for climate change. In addition, digital convenience services such as eco-friendly event operations (reducing disposable cups, introducing reusable and recyclable water supply methods), mobile information services, and real-time location and record lookup functions are expanding. Since 2023, it has been differentiating the design of finisher medals and record certificates and increasing programs linked to tourism products and local festivals, pursuing a transition into a "sports tourism" event. In addition, English-language information and foreign participant sections to attract overseas runners are gradually expanding.
