Claude AI

A conversational AI based on a large language model developed by Anthropic, characterized by Constitutional AI alignment and long-context and agent capabilities.

Claude AI

Overview

Claude is a conversational AI service based on a large language model (LLM) developed by the American AI safety research company Anthropic. It performs a wide range of tasks, from natural language conversation, document summarization and analysis, and code generation to image understanding and autonomous agent work. Since its first release in March 2023, it has undergone rapid generational turnover, and as of 2025 the Claude 4 family has been released. Its most notable characteristic is its adoption of an independent alignment methodology called Constitutional AI, aimed at creating AI that is Helpful, Honest, and Harmless.

Development Background and Anthropic

Anthropic is an AI safety specialist company founded in 2021 by researchers who left OpenAI (Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei, and others). Alongside competition in model performance, the founders made alignment, interpretability, and red-team evaluation core pillars, and Claude is the productized output of these research achievements. Attracting large-scale investment from Google, Amazon, and others, it established itself as one of the three major axes of the generative AI market (OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic) in 2024–2025.

Model Families and Generations

  • Claude 1 / Instant: The first model, released in March 2023. It arrived emphasizing safety benchmarks.
  • Claude 2: In July 2023, it emphasized a 100,000-token context and long-document processing capabilities.
  • Claude 3 Family: Released in March 2024 as a three-tier lineup of Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. It was a strategy of segmenting performance by speed and cost.
  • Claude 3.5 / 3.7: Sonnet 3.5 (June 2024) greatly improved coding and agent capabilities, and 3.7 Sonnet (February 2025) introduced extended thinking.
  • Claude 4 Family: With the release of Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 in 2025, it recorded top-tier performance in long-duration autonomous work, tool use, and software engineering benchmarks. Since then, detailed versions such as Opus 4.1 and Sonnet 4.5 have followed.

Core Technical Features

1. Constitutional AI: Instead of humans labeling every answer, this method trains the model to critique and revise itself according to explicitly stated principles (a constitution). Combined with RLHF, it reduces harmful responses.

2. Ultra-long context: It processes inputs at a baseline of 200,000 tokens and up to around 1 million tokens when extended, allowing it to handle large codebases or lengthy reports in their entirety.

3. Artifacts and Projects: It provides a user experience in which code, documents, and diagrams can be immediately run and edited in a separate panel beside the chat window.

4. Agent capabilities: Through Computer Use (screen operation), Claude Code (terminal-based development assistance), and tool-calling APIs, it has expanded beyond a simple chatbot into a task performer.

5. MCP (Model Context Protocol): An open standard released in November 2024 that standardized the way external data and tools are connected to models. It was subsequently adopted by much of the industry and has become close to a de facto standard.

Safety Policy

Through its Responsible Scaling Policy (RSP), Anthropic operates an ASL (AI Safety Level) rating system that strengthens deployment and security requirements whenever model capabilities exceed certain thresholds. It also discloses evaluations in high-risk areas such as biological, chemical, and cyber domains, and continuously revises policies to prevent misuse.

Pricing Plans and Access Channels

There are a free plan and paid plans including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, and developers use Haiku (lightweight, low-cost), Sonnet (balanced), and Opus (high-performance) models through the Anthropic API. They are also provided through cloud marketplaces such as AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI.

Latest Trends

Claude's changes in 2024–2025 fall largely into three directions. First is the shift from chatbot to agent. As Claude Code, tool use, and long-duration autonomous work features were strengthened, real-world use surged in software development and research automation. Second is standardization leadership. As MCP was integrated into various development tools and editors, Anthropic became an entity proposing ecosystem specifications beyond being a model provider. Third is penetration into the enterprise market. Adoption cases increased in coding, customer support, and document processing, revenue grew rapidly, and the three-way competitive structure with OpenAI and Google Gemini became clear.

In addition, extended thinking, computer use, and multilingual (including Korean) performance improvements continued, and transparency practices such as publishing model cards and system cards and reporting alignment failure cases also formed industry standards. On the other hand, hallucination, controversies over copyrighted training data, and regulatory response remain ongoing challenges.
