CoD4 (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

Overview

CoD4 is the Korean colloquial name for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a first-person shooter (FPS) developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision in November 2007. It changed the direction of a series that had been repeating a World War II setting by shifting to modern warfare, altering the course of the genre, and it was recognized for high polish in both its single-player campaign and multiplayer. It later became the starting point for the Modern Warfare sub-series and had a decisive influence on esports and the popularization of console FPS games.

Development Background and Release

After Call of Duty 2, Infinity Ward worried about exhaustion of the series' subject matter and made the bold decision to move the setting to modern warfare. It was released simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in November 2007, and in Korea it quickly spread under the abbreviation “CoD4.” The development team refined depictions of weapons, equipment, and tactics based on actual military documents and reporting, and built the new IW engine (next-generation engine), greatly raising the level of lighting, shadows, and gun feel.

Campaign

The campaign consists of two narrative axes set in a fictional Middle Eastern country and Russia. Through a dual-protagonist structure featuring a soldier from a U.S. Marine reconnaissance unit and a British SAS operative, it crosscuts perspectives and directly tackles heavy subject matter such as nuclear weapons deployment, a coup, and civilian casualties. In particular, the sniper stealth mission represented by All Ghillied Up, the Chernobyl-evoking presentation, and the shocking nuclear explosion scene are cited as some of the most talked-about memorable scenes in series history. Despite its short length, it is evaluated as having excellent narrative density and tension in its presentation.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer established the structure of faction selection, class customization, the Perk system, and killstreaks (consecutive-kill rewards), creating the standard for FPS multiplayer design for more than a decade afterward. The progression system, in which weapons and attachments are unlocked as players level up, provided motivation to keep playing, and maps such as Shipment, Crossfire, and Crash remain famous maps still discussed today. Hardcore mode and the Prestige (rebirth) system were also popularized by this game.

Technical and Presentational Characteristics

The IW engine achieved impressive graphics for the console and PC environments of the time through real-time shadows, normal-mapping-based weapon depiction, and deep sound design. The feel provided by weapon recoil, aiming, and reload animations became a benchmark for later FPS games, and the hit feedback combining vibration, sound, and screen effects influenced many subsequent titles.

Reception and Influence

It received high scores in the 90s on Metacritic and was also a commercial success, recording the series' biggest hit and elevating Call of Duty into a global IP. It sparked a modern-warfare FPS boom and spread the progression-based multiplayer grammar represented by killstreaks, perks, and prestige. In 2016 it was remastered as Modern Warfare Remastered, and in Korea it long remained near the top of PC bang FPS popularity rankings.

Recent Trends (2024–2025)

In 2024, along with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III season updates, classic map and weapon revival content paying homage to the original was steadily added, continuing “CoD4 nostalgia” marketing. In 2025, news of the next series and Warzone tie-ins became a major topic in the gaming community, and user petitions demanding a remaster or the revival of classic servers appeared repeatedly. In esports, the CDL (Call of Duty League) system has been maintained, and modern-warfare-era rulesets continue to be adopted; in Korea, new players are flowing in through Steam and console remaster discounts and streaming replay content. Meanwhile, whether the remaster will receive official Korean service in connection with Game Rating and Administration Committee classification remains undecided, leaving it a point of interest for fans.
