Comic World

Overview

Comic World (코믹월드) is the largest comprehensive doujin (同人)/subculture event held in South Korea since 1999. It began as a marketplace format where amateur creators (circles) in various genres such as manga, anime, games, and novels directly produced and sold doujinshi and goods and interacted, and today it has established itself as a complex cultural festival combining cosplay, illustration exhibitions, voice actor talk shows, stage events, and more. It is evaluated to have served as a de facto standard platform for Korean subculture fandom.

Establishment and History

The first event is known to have been held in Seoul in February 1999. It began as doujin culture, formed mainly around PC communication and internet clubs in the late 1990s, gathered into offline events, and in the 2000s the holding cycle stabilized, leading to regular events 3–4 times a year in Seoul. In the early days, it was closer to a voluntary gathering centered on small groups of enthusiasts, but after the mid-2000s, as internet communities and fandom culture grew explosively, the number of participating circles and visitors increased rapidly. Later, regional events in Daegu, Busan, etc., and even overseas events appeared, expanding its regional reach.

Event Composition

The venue is largely divided into a circle booth area, corporate booth area, and event area. At circle booths, doujinshi, illustration books, acrylic stands, badges, postcards, and other goods are sold. Corporate booths are participated in by publishers, game companies, anime distributors, etc., and sometimes carry out promotions for new works and goods sales. In the event area, cosplay competitions and photo zones, voice actor talk shows, voice actor/author signing events, quiz contests, live stages, etc., are held. The graffiti wall (graffiti board) where visitors freely leave drawings and illustration exhibitions are also traditional content symbolizing Comic World.

Venues and Scale

In Seoul and the Seoul metropolitan area, large exhibition and convention facilities such as Yangjae aT Center, Hagyeoul SETEC, Ilsan KINTEX, and COEX have been used as main venues. In regional areas, local events are held at Daegu EXCO, Busan BEXCO, etc. Although it varies by edition, circle booths are known to range from hundreds to thousands, and visitors reach tens of thousands. Because of this, the queue to enter right after opening—the so-called "open run"—and early sellouts of limited-edition goods have become scenes symbolizing Comic World.

Participation and Operation

Circles wishing to participate apply for booths in advance, receive allocation, and are listed in the catalog. Visitors purchase tickets and enter, and at the venue the usual method is to look at the catalog, find desired circles, and purchase or interact. Recently, online advance booking and mobile guides have become common, and for participating circles as well, advance promotion through SNS and communities has become standard.

Role in the Subculture Ecosystem

Comic World has functioned as a gateway for new creators and a place for exchange between fandoms. There are many cases of illustrators and manga artists who started activities here advancing into commercial publishing or the game/animation industry, and it contributed to broadening the base of derivative works culture. It also serves as a hub that creates demand for related industries such as doujin culture, cosplay, and goods production.

Latest Trends

As of 2024–2025, the environment surrounding Comic World shows several clear changes. First, the proportion of derivative works and goods using game, webtoon, and animation IP has greatly increased. As small-priced goods such as acrylic stands, badges, and photocards have become central to sales, analyses say the nature of the event is shifting from a "doujinshi marketplace" to closer to a "fandom goods festival." Second, as the event scale grew, events using large convention centers such as KINTEX and BEXCO increased, and competition for booth applications also rose. Third, as debate continues over the sale and exhibition of works made with AI-generated images, some events have shown moves to establish related regulations or restrict sales. Fourth, age verification and harmful content management standards have been strengthened, and safety management and crowd response have become important. Fifth, the culture of advance promotion and reservation through SNS and online communities has taken root, and participation by overseas fans and overseas circles is also noticeably increasing.
