Demacia Cup

A representative cup tournament in Chinese League of Legends, a preseason-style tournament featuring LPL and LDL teams.

Demacia Cup

Overview

The Demacia Cup (德玛西亚杯) is a representative cup tournament held in the Chinese League of Legends (LoL) ecosystem. It takes its name from Demacia, a nation in the League of Legends universe, and is sponsored by Tencent and Riot Games; teams from the LPL (China's top-tier league) and LDL (second-tier league) participate in large numbers. It is a short-term tournament operated separately from the regular league's LPL Spring/Summer seasons, usually held around the turn of the year (year-end to early year), and serves as a stage for teams to check their strength and for rookie players to play their debut matches.

Key details

Nature and status of the tournament

The Demacia Cup is not directly connected to LPL regular season titles (Spring/Summer) or qualification for the World Championship (Worlds). Nevertheless, it carries considerable significance for the Chinese LoL fandom and pro teams. First, because it is effectively the only official stage where teams that have significantly overhauled their rosters mid-season or in the offseason can test new combinations in real matches. Second, the prize money, commercial exposure, and the 'title' itself contribute to the team's brand value. In particular, top LPL teams often take it seriously, so the level of play itself is evaluated as no less high than that of the regular league.

Participating teams and tournament structure

The tournament is generally structured with all or a substantial number of LPL teams and top LDL teams participating through invitations and qualifiers. The usual structure is a group stage followed by a knockout tournament, and the number of participating teams and seeding method vary by year. In some seasons, LPL rookie development programs or academy teams have participated in a separate track. Matches are typically best-of-five (Bo5) in the final and major tournament rounds.

History and major moments

The Demacia Cup has been held steadily since the mid-2010s, and a representative period is when EDG (Edward Gaming) won multiple titles and was called a 'strong team of the Demacia Cup.' Afterwards, top-tier LPL teams such as RNG, Invictus Gaming, Top Esports, and JDG shared the championship trophy. Because it is held right after the offseason transfer market, there are many cases in which the first official match of newly recruited Korean imports (loaned or transferred players) or rookies takes place at the Demacia Cup, which often draws interest from Korean fans as well.

Relationship with the Korean league

The Demacia Cup is not a tournament in which LCK (Korea) teams officially participate, but it receives interest from Korean fans in that it is a stage where the performances of Korean players and coaches who have advanced to the LPL can be seen. It is also a window into the Chinese LoL ecosystem's rookie discovery system and the operation of its second-tier league (LDL).

Recent trends

As of 2024–2025, the Demacia Cup is undergoing adjustments in schedule and scale. As the LPL's Spring/Summer regular seasons and various international tournaments (MSI, World Championship) schedules have become packed, the Demacia Cup is trending toward being held in a compressed format during the year-end offseason. At the same time, amid financial sustainability issues for esports organizations and a trend of roster reduction, some teams are choosing a strategy of fielding rookie/academy-focused rosters at the Demacia Cup while resting their starters. Accordingly, while the tournament's 'real-match verification' nature is maintained, some point out that the variance in performance has grown depending on the entry lists of big clubs. In terms of broadcasting and broadcast rights, distribution centered on Chinese streaming platforms (Bilibili, Huya, Douyu, etc.) continues, and the spread of highlights and meme content through social media has established itself as a major driver of the tournament's popularity.
