Different (다른)
Overview
'다른' (dareun) is the adnominal (prenominal) form of the Korean adjective '다르다' (dareuda), an expression indicating that two or more objects are not the same as one another. Going beyond the simple language of comparison, it extends into a conceptual term designating "that which is separate from me" or "the other (他者)," and it is one of the most commonly used yet most frequently misused words in Korean. Confusion with '틀리다' (teullida) in particular is counted among the representative vocabulary errors of Korean speakers.

Form and grammar
'다르다' shows irregular conjugation in which 'ㅡ' is dropped when a vowel ending is attached to the stem '다르-'. It therefore conjugates as '달라', '달랐다', '다르니', '다르오' rather than '다라'. The adnominal forms are '다른' (present) and '다를' (future/conjectural); the adverbial form is '달리' and the nominal form is '다름'. Because '다른' is used as a determiner that must be followed by a noun, it combines as in "다른 사람" (another person), "다른 곳" (another place), and "다른 생각" (a different thought). Here '다른' is classified by part of speech as a determiner, but since it is a form derived from an adjective stem, it is distinctive in that it cannot be used predicatively (e.g., it cannot end a sentence as in "그는 다른").
Layers of meaning
'다른' divides into several layers depending on context. First, in its comparative sense it reveals a difference, as in "이 옷과 다른 색" (a color different from this clothing). Second, it has the meaning of "one more" that points to a separate object, as in "다른 사람이 대신 왔다" (someone else came instead). Third, there is the usage indicating exception or addition, as in "다른 볼일 없으세요?" (Do you have any other business?). Fourth, in the construction of negative emphasis "다른 게 아니라" (it's not that, but), it functions as a discourse marker that shifts the topic. That a single form simultaneously performs the functions of comparison, designation, exception, and topic shift is what characterizes '다른'.
'다르다' and '틀리다'
The most frequent misuse in Korean is the confusion of '다르다' and '틀리다'. '틀리다' means not conforming to a standard or fact, whereas '다르다' means merely not being the same. Accordingly, "취향이 다르다" (tastes differ) is correct but "취향이 틀리다" is awkward, and while "답이 틀렸다" (the answer is wrong) is correct, "답이 달랐다" (the answer was different) means something else in the context of an examination in which a correct answer exists. The problem is that both words readily take on a nuance of "negative evaluation," which gives rise to a social bias in which "difference" is expressed as "wrongness."
Otherness and social implications
In philosophy, "the different" is precisely the other. Sartre held that the gaze of others defines the self, and Levinas said that the face of the other gives rise to an ethical demand. Korean '다른' is, in this way, the minimal unit of vocabulary designating "that which is not me," and it is bound up with the question of whether difference is to be made grounds for exclusion or an object of respect.
Recent trends
In 2024–2025, a discourse reinterpreting "difference" as diversity rather than discrimination spread, centering on educational and psychological content. As the sentence "너는 틀린 게 아니라 다른 거야" (You are not wrong, you are different) established itself as a signature message in the fields of self-help, counseling, and education, the distinction between '다르다' and '틀리다' rose to prominence as a topic of linguistic sensitivity beyond a mere question of orthography. At the same time, cases in which generative AI translators and conversational models render '다르다' and '틀리다' interchangeably have been pointed out, and this distinction is being treated as a key indicator in Korean language learning and in the evaluation of translation quality. In addition, with the spread of DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) discourse, the expression "respect for difference" has taken root as language in corporate training and public campaigns, and in Korean language education settings, teaching methods that distinguish homophonous variant forms such as the determiner '다른' and '달은' (a conjugated form of '달다') are being emphasized. Online, the meme "다른 게 아니라 틀린 거 아니냐" (Isn't it not different but simply wrong?) has been used as wordplay that paradoxically calls attention to the need for this distinction.
