Doll
Overview
A doll (Korean: 인형; 人形) is a general term for three-dimensional figures modeled after the forms of humans, animals, or sometimes imaginary beings. Starting as objects for ancient shamanistic and ritual purposes, their functions have differentiated into children's play tools, decorative objects, collectibles, and artistic media. Today, dolls go beyond simple toys, and their scope continues to expand as a medium for taste consumption, subculture, and even emotional connection.

History and Origins
The origins of dolls trace back to prehistoric clay figurines (土偶) and wooden figures (木偶). In ancient Egypt and Greece, ritual dolls embodying gods have been found; in East Asia, dolls used as substitutes in shamanistic beliefs or as burial goods have been discovered. In Korea, clay figurines from the Three Kingdoms period, mother-of-pearl and wooden carved dolls from the Joseon period, and various scarecrow-type dolls used in folk games form a traditional lineage. After the Industrial Revolution, porcelain dolls from Germany and France and the wooden doll industry of Nuremberg, Germany, became the starting point of the modern toy industry.
Materials and Production Methods
Traditionally wood, clay, cloth, wax, porcelain, and other materials were used; in the 20th century, celluloid and hard plastics (ABS, PVC) became mainstream. Recently, digital and precision production techniques such as 3D printing, silicone, and resin casting have become widespread, making small-lot, multi-variety production easier. Ball-jointed dolls (BJDs) with articulated movement are characterized by hand finishing and customization.
Types and Classification
- Play dolls: Mass-produced toys such as Barbie, Blythe, and action figures
- Traditional dolls: Hanbok dolls, folk dolls from various countries, souvenir dolls
- Art dolls: Collectible and exhibition dolls into which the artist's sculptural intent is incorporated
- Ball-jointed dolls (BJDs): Hobby dolls with joints implemented through ball joints
- Art toys and blind boxes: A genre in which designer toys have become popular in capsule-toy form
- Educational and therapeutic dolls: Role-play, puppet theater, and psychotherapy tools
Cultural Significance
Dolls are a representative medium through which humans miniaturize and project themselves. Puppet theater (kkokdugaksi noreum, marionettes) developed into a theatrical form containing social satire, and in literature and film, fantasies in which dolls come to life (Pinocchio, Annabelle, etc.) are repeatedly used. Dolls also provide emotional comfort as objects of attachment, and in collecting culture they form independent market rules in which rarity and condition grades determine price.
Industry and Market
Dolls are a core category of the toy industry and account for a significant share of the global toy market. There is a clear polarization between low-cost mass-produced products and limited-edition collectibles, and the secondhand and resale markets have developed separately. In Korea, there are many cases in which BJD and art doll makers run small brands targeting overseas demand.
Recent Trends
The biggest change in doll culture in 2024–2025 is the mainstreaming of collectible consumption. Chinese-origin Pop Mart-style blind boxes and designer art toys have taken root in Korea as well, establishing dolls as a key item in the adult hobby market, and pop-up stores and limited-edition drop sales have become everyday distribution methods. At the same time, conversational smart dolls combining generative AI, voice recognition, and small actuators have emerged, testing the boundary between play and emotional care. Meanwhile, regulatory discussions have also become active regarding personal information collection and emotional dependence related to AI-based children's dolls. Other notable trends include the emphasis on recycled materials and repair culture due to sustainability issues, and the expansion of fandom-led secondary creation ecosystems, such as custom painting and repainting, centered on communities. In Korea, tourism souvenirs combining traditional dolls with character dolls, and cultural contentization linked to puppet theater and exhibitions, are increasing.
