Exhibition
Overview
Exhibition (展示, Exhibition) is a cultural act and industry that systematically arranges artworks, artifacts, technology, information, etc. in a specific space and shows them to visitors. It is held in various places such as art museums, museums, science museums, and convention centers, and has developed beyond simple appreciation into complex content encompassing education, documentation, distribution, and tourism. Contemporary exhibitions are understood as the result of 'curation' in which the organizer's intention and the visitor's experience interact.

Types of Exhibitions
Exhibitions are largely divided into permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions. Permanent exhibitions are a form in which collections are publicly displayed on a fixed basis, while special exhibitions operate for a limited period centered on a specific theme or artist. By medium, they are classified into art exhibitions centered on paintings and sculptures, history exhibitions centered on artifacts, interactive experiential exhibitions, industrial and technology expos, and commercial pop-up exhibitions. Recently, hybrid forms combining online and metaverse exhibitions with offline exhibitions are also increasing.
Planning and Curation
The success or failure of an exhibition is determined at the planning stage. Curators comprehensively design directing elements such as theme setting, artwork selection, visitor flow design, lighting, color, sound, and graphics. The core is the 'narrative structure' that determines in what order visitors will feel what, and recently, participatory and immersive directing for visitors has become important. Commentary systems such as docents, audio guides, QR-based commentary, and AI chatbot guidance have also become part of exhibition planning.
Space and Operation
In addition to specialized exhibition spaces such as art museums and museums, complex cultural spaces, department stores, abandoned industrial facilities, and outdoor plazas are used as exhibition venues. Temperature, humidity, and illuminance management, artwork preservation and safety, visitor etiquette guidance, and reservation and ticket system operation are essential elements of exhibitions. For special exhibitions, advance booking, timed admission, and revenue structures linked to merchandise sales have become common.
Industrial and Social Significance
Exhibitions are both a channel for cultural enjoyment and an industry that creates city brands and tourism demand. Large special exhibitions have ripple effects on local economies, and art fairs and biennales become venues for the art market and international exchange. Exhibitions also contribute to forming public discourse as a medium for conveying historical events or social issues to the public.
Latest Trends
The biggest trends in the exhibition world in 2024–2025 are 'immersive/experiential' and 'digital transformation.' Interactive exhibitions using projection mapping, media art, and generative AI have spread widely among the public, and exhibitions combining escape-room and game-like narratives have also increased. At the same time, under the influence of K-culture, cases of domestic special exhibitions being exported overseas or large global exhibitions being held on tour in Korea have increased. In terms of sustainability, 'green exhibition' guidelines that use reusable exhibition structures instead of one-time props are spreading, and customized visitor flow and recommendation services through visitor data analysis are being introduced. Rising ticket prices, reservation competition, and generational polarization of visitor demographics remain challenges to be solved.
