Explosive Surge (폭증)
Overview
Explosive surge (Korean: 폭증, 暴增) refers to a phenomenon in which a number or quantity increases explosively within a short period. It carries a nuance that the speed and scale of the increase are far greater and more shocking than a simple 'increase' or 'sharp increase (급증, 急增)', and is mainly used when quantitative indicators such as prices, transaction volume, data traffic, population, and confirmed case counts soar beyond a controllable range. In other words, explosive surge is a concept focused on the 'slope' and 'unpredictability' of quantitative change rather than its 'direction.'

Definition and Etymology
'폭(暴)' means fierce and sudden, and '증(增)' means to increase. Combined, 폭증 dictionary-wise means 'the degree of sudden increase is very severe.' In English, it is rendered as surge, explosion, spike, exponential growth, etc., but while each of these expressions emphasizes a different context, 폭증 is distinguished in that it connotes both scale and speed simultaneously.
Statistical Characteristics
Explosive surge is generally observed not in linear growth but in the early-to-mid section of an exponential growth curve. It appears at first gradual, then once a critical point is passed, takes the form of a so-called 'hockey stick curve' in which the figure multiplies several times within a short period. For this reason, during an explosive surge phase, linear forecasts based on past data rarely hold, and extrapolation errors occur frequently. In addition, explosive surges usually pair with reversion (mean reversion) or sharp declines, so rises and falls often appear asymmetrically.
Major Areas of Occurrence
Economy and Prices
Representative examples include prices of specific raw materials or agricultural products, jeonse deposit prices, exchange rates, and cryptocurrency transaction volumes surging in a short period. They occur when supply shocks, demand spikes, and speculative sentiment overlap, and are followed by government price controls or emergency measures.
Data and Traffic
When a particular issue spreads, search volume, social media mentions, and server requests can surge instantly. This can lead to server overload and service outages (so-called 'traffic surge blackouts'), making cloud autoscaling and load-balancing design essential.
Society and Population
Population influx into a particular region, immigration applications, applicants for specific occupations, and confirmed cases of infectious disease can also be subjects of explosive surge. Population surge puts pressure on housing, transportation, and environmental infrastructure and causes lags in policy response.
Measurement and Analysis
Whether an explosive surge is occurring is usually judged by year-over-year change rates, month-over-month change rates, and changes in the slope of a log-scale graph. Log transformation makes exponential surge sections appear as straight lines, making trend identification easier. Recently, techniques for early detection of explosive surge signals using anomaly detection algorithms and real-time streaming analytics have come into wide use.
Side Effects and Responses
Explosive surge can cause distortion in resource allocation, bottlenecks, bubble formation and collapse, and social unrest. Responses include demand suppression policies, supply expansion, securing buffer inventories, building early warning systems, and elastic infrastructure expansion.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, with the spread of generative AI services, the explosive surge in inference traffic and power demand has emerged as a key topic in industry. As data center power consumption and cooling demand rise rapidly, burdens on power grids and carbon emissions issues are being raised simultaneously. In addition, the number of heatwave and cold wave days due to climate anomalies, damage costs from natural disasters, and insurance claims are repeatedly recording explosive surge phases. In the digital realm, short-form content and real-time commerce traffic concentrate in specific time slots, making response to server surges a key indicator of service competitiveness. Economically, energy and grain price volatility due to geopolitical conflicts and transaction volume surges in asset markets during interest rate transition periods are major observation targets. Governments and companies around the world are advancing real-time data pipelines and predictive models, making 'early detection and buffering of explosive surges' a basic capability of policy and management.
