Final Table
Overview
In poker tournaments, the Final Table (파이널 테이블) refers to the last table where the remaining players gather to determine the ultimate winner. It is generally formed when the field has been reduced to 9 or 6 players, and it is the key stage where prize money and the title are at stake. The final table goes beyond simply continuing the event to become the central stage for broadcasting, coverage, and strategic analysis.
Main Details
Definition and Origin
The structure of a poker tournament consolidates tables as participants are eliminated. The players remaining at the last table are called the final table. The term became established as tournament poker gained popularity, and the 9-player final table of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event is especially famous. In the past, the final table proceeded naturally, but the practice emerged of separating, broadcasting, and analyzing it.
Composition and Format
The number of players at the final table varies by tournament. The traditional WSOP Main Event operates with 9 players, while the World Poker Tour (WPT) operates with a 6-player final table. In recent years, as 6-max tournaments have increased, 6-player final tables have also become common. Players are seated according to chip counts, and the dealer button position and blind levels are announced. Upon reaching the final table, blinds rise significantly and the ratio of blinds to average stack decreases, making preflop all-in situations frequent. In addition, hand-for-hand play may be applied during the bubble (just before entering the money).
Strategic Characteristics
At the final table, the influence of the Independent Chip Model (ICM) grows. Because the differences in prize money are large, decisions must consider prize EV rather than simple chip EV. Short stacks play tightly to survive, while big stacks employ an aggressive strategy to pressure opponents. Open ranges, call ranges, and 3-bet strategies vary according to position and stack size, and deals (prize distribution negotiations) may be discussed when necessary. Recently, research on final table strategy using GTO (Game Theory Optimal) solvers has been active.
Major Tournament Examples
The WSOP Main Event final table features 9 players competing and is broadcast through outlets such as ESPN. The WPT final table proceeds with 6 players, showing fast-paced play. In Asia, APT (Asia Poker Tour) and Korea's KPT, among others, operate separate final tables and deliver the live scene to spectators and viewers.
Media and Coverage
Final tables are often held in environments specialized for broadcasting. Hole cards are revealed through delayed broadcast, and content spreads in real time through streaming platforms and social media. Commentators analyze play based on ICM and stack sizes to help viewers understand.
Latest Trends
As of 2024-2025, final tables are becoming increasingly sports-entertainment oriented. The 2024 WSOP Main Event maintained a 9-player final table and drew global attention, and in 2025, 6-max tournaments and short-deck formats are trending upward in popularity. As AI-based analysis tools and real-time hole card tracking technology advance, the refinement of final table strategy is accelerating. In addition, more platforms are separately broadcasting the final tables of online tournaments, and interest in final tables is growing as the base of poker tournaments expands in Asia, including Korea.
