Gangseo-gu
Overview
Gangseo-gu (강서구, 江西區) is an autonomous district in the southwestern part of Seoul Special City, situated south of the Han River, and is Seoul's representative gateway area, home to Gimpo International Airport and the Magok District. Meanwhile, a district of the same name also exists in Busan Metropolitan City, so the administrative district name is duplicated; both areas share the characteristic of concentrated large-scale development and logistics and transportation infrastructure. This document focuses on Gangseo-gu in Seoul while also covering Gangseo-gu in Busan Metropolitan City.

Geography and Location
Seoul's Gangseo-gu borders Yangcheon-gu to the east, Mapo-gu and Eunpyeong-gu across the Han River to the north, and, beyond the Seoul city limits to the west, adjoins Incheon Metropolitan City and Gimpo City. The Han River and Anyangcheon Stream form the district's boundaries, and the district as a whole has a generally low-lying plain topography. In the past it was an area prone to frequent flood damage, but conditions have improved through the maintenance of embankments and flood-control facilities.
Administration and Population
Gangseo-gu comprises numerous administrative dongs, including Deungchon-dong, Hwagok-dong, Gayang-dong, Magok-dong, Balsan-dong, Ujangsan-dong, Gonghang-dong, Banghwa-dong, Yeomchang-dong, and Gaehwa-dong. The Hwagok-dong area is one of Seoul's most densely populated areas and a representative residential concentration, with many multi-household and multi-family homes and a diverse range of local commercial districts. Large-scale apartment complexes have been built in the Gayang and Deungchon areas.
Transportation Infrastructure
Gimpo International Airport is located here, serving as Seoul's aviation gateway, and the Airport Railroad (AREX) connected to it, Seoul Subway Lines 5 and 9, and the Gimpo Goldline all pass through the district. Line 9 offers excellent access to Gangnam through its express service, so it carries a large commuting population. Major arterial roads such as the Olympic Expressway, the Nambu Beltway, and Gonghang-daero connect the area, and it is also close to the West Coast Expressway.
Economy and Industry
The Magok District has been developed as one of Seoul's representative high-tech industrial and research clusters, where large corporate research centers such as LG Science Park, bio and pharmaceutical companies, and related startups are concentrated. The areas around Balsan Station and Magongnaru Station have grown into emerging centers with concentrated business and commercial functions. In addition, distribution and logistics industries that leverage the airport and logistics base coexist with a local economy centered on traditional markets and small neighborhood commercial districts.
Culture and Tourism
Seoul Botanic Park (Magok), the Gyeomjae Jeong Seon Art Museum, the Heo Jun Museum, the Gangseo Hangang Park, and Ujangsan are representative cultural and leisure spaces. There are abundant cultural resources associated with historical figures such as Gyeomjae Jeong Seon and Heo Jun, and leisure activities utilizing the ecological and park infrastructure along the Han River are active.
Gangseo-gu, Busan Metropolitan City
Busan's Gangseo-gu is located in the western part of Busan and is a core logistics and industrial area encompassing Gimhae International Airport and the New Port area. Population and urban functions are expanding with the development of new towns such as Myeongji Ocean City and the creation of Eco Delta City.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, Gangseo-gu has continued to upgrade the bio and research cluster in the Magok District, pursuing the attraction of related companies and improvements to residential conditions. Expansion of cultural and tourism infrastructure centered on Seoul Botanic Park and the Hangang Park, along with ongoing discussions on transportation improvements to ease congestion on Lines 9 and 5, are also continuing. In Busan's Gangseo-gu, the creation of Eco Delta City as a smart city and the expansion of the logistics complex behind the New Port are emerging as key tasks. In both areas, industrial upgrading based on airport and logistics infrastructure and improvements in housing and transportation have become major policy topics.
