Genesis GV80

Overview

The Genesis GV80 is the first SUV from Genesis, Hyundai Motor's premium brand, launched in South Korea in January 2020. With a rear-wheel-drive-based platform, large body, and premium features, it competes directly with German premium SUVs such as the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and Audi Q7, and is evaluated as a model that played a decisive role in expanding Genesis brand sales and building its image. In the vehicle name, GV follows the Genesis SUV naming convention (Genesis Vehicle), and 80 denotes the hierarchy within the lineup.

Key Details

Development Background and Launch

The GV80 was mass-produced based on the GV80 concept car unveiled in 2017, and is the first product to expand the Genesis lineup, previously centered on sedans, into SUVs. It shares a platform with the G80 and was designed from the development stage to offer both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (HTRAC) options. Starting with its domestic launch in January 2020, it was introduced sequentially to global markets including the United States, the Middle East, and China.

Body and Powertrain

Based on the early first-generation model, it has a large SUV body measuring approximately 4,945 mm in length, 1,975 mm in width, 1,715 mm in height, and 2,955 mm in wheelbase. Powertrain options include a 2.5-liter gasoline turbo four-cylinder (approx. 304 hp), a 3.5-liter gasoline twin-turbo V6 (approx. 380 hp), and a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six (approx. 278 hp), combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. With five seats as standard, seating configurations include four seats (second-row individual seats), six seats, and seven seats, offering a wide range of choices depending on use.

Technology and Convenience Features

The GV80 is equipped with a large number of Genesis advanced features, including Road Preview electronically controlled suspension, active road-noise reduction (RANC), Ergo Motion seats, a 14.5-inch infotainment display, a 12.3-inch 3D instrument cluster, augmented reality navigation, and a fingerprint authentication system. In terms of safety, it provides 10 airbags, Highway Driving Assist (HDA 2), Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot View Monitor, rear passenger detection, and others, and earned the highest rating (TSP+) in the U.S. IIHS crash evaluations.

Market Performance and Positioning

The GV80 quickly expanded its share in the domestic large SUV market immediately after launch, and in the U.S. market it established itself as a mainstay model accounting for the largest share of Genesis brand sales. It was adopted as an official vehicle for the President of South Korea, a protocol vehicle for major corporations, and a protocol vehicle for overseas summits, contributing to raising brand awareness.

Latest Trends

In October 2023, Genesis unveiled the facelifted GV80. Inside, a 27-inch integrated OLED display, a new steering wheel, and a crystal-type electronic shift lever were applied, while the exterior was refined with two-line headlamps, MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology, and a newly designed Crest grille. Around the same time, the coupe-style derivative GV80 Coupe was added, offering an approximately 415 hp specification combining a 3.5-liter gasoline turbo with a 48V electric supercharger, along with dedicated tuned suspension.

In 2024–2025, through the 2025 model year update, the feature composition was refined and connected features such as over-the-air software updates (OTA), digital key, and in-cabin fingerprint authentication were strengthened. In addition, Genesis is continuously reviewing the possibility of hybrid and pure electric derivatives for the GV80 lineup in line with the transition to electrification, and expectations for a high-performance SUV derivative continue amid the expansion of the Magma high-performance lineup. In the global market, while the share of North American sales is steadily increasing, as of 2025 the GV80 remains the core model of the Genesis SUV lineup (GV70, GV80, GV80 Coupe).
