Genesis GV90

Genesis's flagship electrified SUV, an ultra-large luxury EV project previewed by the 2024 Neolun Concept.

Genesis GV90

Overview

Genesis GV90 is a large to ultra-large electrified SUV being developed by Genesis, the premium brand of Hyundai Motor Group. As the flagship model positioned at the very top of the brand lineup, it sits above the GV80 and is a vehicle that symbolizes both Genesis's transition to electrification and its luxury identity. Its design direction was previewed through the "Neolun Concept" unveiled in 2024, and it is being developed with an evolved EV platform based on E-GMP and a large-capacity battery, targeting a driving range of over 500 km on a single charge.

Key Details

Positioning and Development Background

Genesis has built an SUV lineup progressing through the GV60, GV70, and GV80, but it lacked an ultra-large luxury electric SUV to compete with the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX, Land Rover Electric, and others. The GV90 is a model intended to fill this gap, and rather than a simple enlargement of the body, it takes on a "flagship" character that concentrates the brand's technological capabilities and craftsmanship. The platform is known to adopt an electrification-dedicated architecture that expands on the existing E-GMP, and an 800V high-voltage system and ultra-fast charging capability are anticipated.

Neolun Concept

The Neolun Concept, unveiled in March 2024 at Genesis House in New York, USA, corresponds to a design preview of the GV90. Its key features are as follows.

  • B-pillarless design and coach doors: By removing the middle pillar and having the front and rear doors open in opposite directions, it maximized the sense of openness of the passenger space.
  • Swiveling seats: It presented a concept in which the front seats rotate rearward, allowing the interior to be used like a lounge.
  • Indigo blue exterior color: Known to be a color inspired by traditional Korean najeon (mother-of-pearl lacquerware) and the moon jar.
  • Button-free interior orientation: It minimized physical buttons and emphasized flexible displays and voice/gesture interfaces.

The concept's coach doors and removal of the B-pillar are difficult to realize as-is at mass-production scale due to legal regulations and crash safety issues, so the production version is expected to be adjusted considerably and in stages.

Powertrain and Performance

The GV90 is expected to be based on a large-capacity battery (estimated at 100 kWh or more) and dual-motor all-wheel drive, with output of over 600 horsepower mentioned for the high-performance version. Based on an 800V architecture, it aims to support 350 kW-class ultra-fast charging to charge a substantial portion of the battery in around 20 minutes. In addition, the possibility is raised that Level 3 autonomous driving technology, such as Highway Driving Pilot (HDP), will be equipped.

Production and Price

Production is expected to take place at Hyundai Motor Group's EV-dedicated plants, with the domestic Ulsan EV-dedicated line and the HMGMA plant in Georgia, USA mentioned as candidates. The prevailing observation is that the price will be set high, in the mid-100 million won range or above, targeting the brand's top-tier luxury segment.

Latest Trends

After the Neolun Concept was unveiled in 2024, in 2024–2025, prototypes covered in camouflage have continued to be spotted during driving tests, leading to analysis that it has entered the mass-production preparation stage. In particular, as tests focused on interior spaciousness, ride comfort, and rear-seat convenience features have been observed, the direction of a "passenger-centric" flagship rather than a "driver-centric" one is being reinforced. Industry watchers predict a possible unveiling and launch between late 2025 and 2026, and they see the marketability of an ultra-high-priced electric SUV as being put to the test amid the phase of slowing electrification demand growth (the "chasm"). At the same time, under its SDV (Software Defined Vehicle) strategy, software competitiveness such as over-the-air updates (OTA), connected services, and AI-based voice assistants is expected to emerge as a core differentiator of the GV90. Comparisons with competing models such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX, Lucid Gravity, and Land Rover Electric are also continuing.
