Geuminpe
Overview
'Geuminpe' (그민페) is a neologism used in Korean internet communities and SNS, formed by combining '민폐 (民弊)' with the demonstrative determiner '그'. It is used to refer to a person or character who repeatedly causes problems in a particular work, broadcast, organization, or game scene, or to a nuisance case that has already been mentioned many times and is 'known without needing explanation.' It is not a word registered in standard language but an expression that spread colloquially, and it is characterized by slight differences in spelling and semantic range among groups.

Etymology and formation process
There are two core components. First, '민페', the colloquial abbreviated form of '민폐'. Online, there is a strong tendency to write as pronounced, so '민페' is used before '민폐', and the determiner '그' was attached to it. Second, the pragmatic function of the demonstrative determiner '그'. In Korean internet discourse, '그' has functioned beyond simple reference as a marker indicating the shared presupposition 'that object we all know' (e.g., '그분', '그 영화', '그 사건'). 'Geuminpe' combines these two elements to create the implication 'that nuisance everyone knows, though the explanation is omitted.'
Morphological and pragmatic characteristics
- Context dependence: Whom 'Geuminpe' refers to depends entirely on the shared knowledge of the conversation participants. Therefore, it is often used without naming a specific person at the beginning of a post.
- Tendency toward proper-nounization: When a specific character or person is repeatedly referred to, it effectively solidifies like a proper noun. In this case, 'Geuminpe' functions as an alias referring to that target.
- Derivation and usage: Derived forms such as 'Geuminpe-ryeok (the ability to produce repeated nuisances)', 'Geuminpe-jit', and 'Geuminpe moment' are created, and it is also used as a predicate ('This episode was Geuminpe').
- Spelling variants: '그민폐', '그 민페', and '그민페' are used interchangeably, and spacing rules have not been established.
Usage contexts
It is mainly observed in three areas. First, in fandom boards for narratives such as webtoons, dramas, and animations, it is used to criticize developments, as in 'This episode again features Geuminpe.' Second, in real-time streaming chats, it is used to point out repeated mistakes by the broadcast host or cast. Third, in team-based games, it is used to refer to a teammate who repeats the same mistake, and in this case it partially overlaps with 'troll'. In addition, it has expanded as a euphemism to subtly refer to repeat problem actors in real-world groups such as organizations, schools, and workplaces.
Similar expressions and comparison
- 민폐/민페 (nuisance): A common noun referring to the problem behavior itself. 'Geuminpe' adds referentiality and a shared presupposition to it.
- Nuisance character (민폐캐): An analytical term referring to a type of character in a narrative, more neutral than 'Geuminpe'.
- Troll: In game and online contexts, it often implies intentionality as well, so the intensity of criticism is stronger than 'Geuminpe'.
- '그분' (that person): A representative precedent sharing the shared-presupposition function of the demonstrative determiner '그'.
Controversies and criticism
'Geuminpe' allows people to effectively single out a specific person while avoiding direct naming by using anonymity. For this reason, it can strengthen stigmatization and collective criticism, and there is also a risk of defamation and insult against real people. Community moderators increasingly treat expressions that identify specific individuals as subject to sanctions, and within fandoms, debates over 'the boundary between criticism and mockery' are repeated. In addition, discussions on language purification have been raised regarding the phenomenon in which it becomes fixed like everyday language among adolescents.
Recent trends
As of 2024–2025, 'Geuminpe' has spread beyond the slang of a specific community to subtitles and meme videos on short-form platforms, real-time chats, and fandom summary accounts. In particular, as edited videos are reprocessed into montages in the 'Geuminpe moment' format, the trend in which the expression is separated from a specific work and recycled as a general-purpose meme stands out. At the same time, as generative AI-based summarization and translation tools carry community slang as is, cases of circulation without context have increased, and criticisms of misuse of meaning are also being raised. Each platform tends to strengthen filtering and reporting standards for accusatory expressions that single people out, and it is also cited as a case in linguistic data research seeking to track changes in meaning of neologisms not listed in dictionaries. However, because a standard spelling has not been established, search inflows are dispersed, and the semantic range differs by region and age, which remains an unresolved task.
