Gimcheon Gimbap Festival

Overview

Gimcheon Gimbap Festival is a food and culture festival held in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to revitalize the local commercial district and tourism through gimbap. In connection with gimbap attractions around Gimcheon Station and Jungang Market, it brands a cost-effective gimbap culture and has established itself as a participatory festival enjoyed by citizens and tourists. Since its first holding in 2023, it has grown into a representative local festival of Gimcheon in a short period.

Key Details

Background

Gimcheon has long developed gimbap and bunsik (Korean snack) culture around the station and market alleys as a key railway transportation hub. In particular, gimbap restaurants near Gimcheon Station gained word of mouth for their low prices and generous portions, forming a 'Gimbap City' image. Gimcheon City and local merchants set the goal of expanding this asset into a festival to inject vitality into the stagnant old downtown and attract young people and family tourists.

Main Programs

  • Gimbap-making experience: A hands-on program where families, couples, and foreign tourists roll gimbap themselves.
  • Gimbap cooking contest: A competition in which local businesses and citizens participate and compete with original gimbap recipes.
  • Gimbap-eating and speed-eating events: Visitor-participation games that heighten the festive atmosphere.
  • Gimbap Alley tour: A course that visits famous gimbap restaurants around Gimcheon Station and Jungang Market.
  • Night market and flea market: Sales of local agricultural products, handmade foods, and crafts.
  • Performance and experience booths: Operation of busking, dance, magic, children's playground, and photo zones.

Venue Layout

The festival is held mainly around Gimcheon Station Plaza, Jungang Market, and the gimbap-specialized street. The main stage hosts the opening ceremony and performances, while the food zone features local gimbap businesses and food trucks. The experience zone consists of gimbap ingredient exhibitions, gimbap packaging design, and programs linked to the traditional market. At night, landscape lighting and a night market are operated, aiming for a stay-type festival.

Local Linkage Effects

During the festival, the number of Gimcheon Station users and nearby market visitors increases, generating direct sales effects for the local commercial district. Using the gimbap festival as an opportunity, Gimcheon City establishes a shared 'Gimcheon Gimbap' brand and hygiene and quality management standards, and supports online promotion for local businesses. It also pursues a strategy to increase tourism stay time by developing day-trip and one-night/two-day courses linked to nearby tourist sites such as Jikjisa Temple, the Gimcheon Culture and Arts Center, and Samyeongdaesa Park.

Recent Trends

In 2024, the festival's operation method became more advanced. Hygiene inspections and a price display system for participating businesses were strengthened, and a pre-reservation system and mobile payments were introduced to reduce congestion. In 2025, under the theme of 'Gimbap + Railroad,' railroad tourism products linked to Gimcheon Station, gimbap classes for foreign visitors, and an eco-friendly reusable container campaign are expected to expand. In addition, online spread strategies such as the development of gimbap desserts and fusion gimbap in collaboration with local young entrepreneurs, and a short-form content contest, are being discussed. The festival is developing beyond a simple food event into a representative brand festival that connects Gimcheon's identity with the revitalization of the old downtown.
