Gohyeon Port

Overview

Gohyeon Port is a coastal port (trade port) located in the Gohyeon-dong area of Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, and serves as the gateway port for the Gohyeon area, the administrative and commercial center of northern Geoje Island. Along with Jangseungpo Port, it is regarded as one of the representative ports of Geoje, and it has the character of a multipurpose port combining cargo logistics, coastal passenger transport, and fisheries functions. Since the 2010s, as the Gohyeon Port redevelopment project has been pursued, issues of marina and waterfront space creation and urban regeneration have become intertwined, making it a representative development issue in the Geoje area.

Location and Geographical Characteristics

Gohyeon Port is located on the northern coast of Geoje Island, adjacent to Geoje City Hall and the Gohyeon downtown area. Because the waters are near Gyeonnaeryang, the tidal range is large and the water is relatively shallow, so operations have centered on coastal cargo ships, fishing boats, and small passenger ships rather than berthing of large vessels. A distinctive feature is that the hinterland is formed by Geoje's central commercial district and residential areas, closely integrating port and urban functions.

Port Functions and Facilities

  • Logistics and Freight: It handles coastal cargo functions such as construction materials, daily necessities, and shipbuilding-related equipment and materials. It is greatly affected by the Geoje region's shipbuilding industry and construction market.
  • Passenger and Coastal Transport: Coastal passenger routes connecting to nearby areas such as Busan and functions linking island areas have been partly operated, and use by sightseeing boats and leisure vessels increases during the peak tourist season.
  • Fisheries and Aquaculture: Mooring of small fishing vessels and functions related to aquaculture and shipment are carried out in parallel.
  • Waterfront and Leisure: The area around the breakwaters and floating piers is also used as citizens' leisure space for fishing and walking.

History and Changes

In the past, Gohyeon Port began as a small harbor where daily necessities and seafood of Geoje Island were traded, and it grew into a coastal logistics hub thanks to the urbanization of the Geoje area and the growth of the shipbuilding industry. Later, as land transport networks such as Geoje Bridge and New Geoje Bridge were expanded, the status of the port changed, and functional differentiation took place, with Jangseungpo Port taking on a passenger-centered role. From the late 2000s, discussions on port redevelopment began in earnest to improve aging port facilities and utilize idle land.

Gohyeon Port Redevelopment Project

In the Gohyeon Port area, a port redevelopment project was pursued with the goals of rearranging port functions and carrying out mixed-use development of idle and aging sites. Its main contents include reclamation of public waters and creation of waterfront spaces, introduction of marina facilities and commercial and residential functions, and relocation and improvement of existing port facilities. During the project, discussions continued over issues such as the scope of reclamation, environmental impact, compensation for fishing rights, and securing project feasibility, and the schedule was adjusted several times due to economic fluctuations and project operator issues. This project is a large-scale project that could change the spatial structure and landscape of the Geoje urban area, and it remains a major issue in local politics and economy.

Significance in the Local Community

Gohyeon Port is recognized not merely as a logistics facility but as a living space for Geoje citizens and part of the local identity. Matters such as the use of public waters related to port redevelopment, securing publicness, and readiness to accommodate tourists are issues on which interests sharply conflict among civic groups, merchants, and fishers. In addition, as an access gateway for tourists visiting Geoje, the need for improvement linked to transport, accommodation, and commercial districts is continually raised.

Recent Trends

In 2024–2025, discussions continue over the maintenance of the Gohyeon Port area and the use of waterfront spaces. Consultations are under way among Geoje City, the city council, and residents regarding the progress of the port redevelopment project and plans for reclamation and facility construction, and measures to secure project feasibility and publicness have emerged as key issues. In addition, with the recovery of tourism demand in Geoje, demand is growing for expanding urban tourism infrastructure around Gohyeon Port, such as marinas, waterside walking paths, and nighttime scenery, and changes in coastal cargo volume following the recovery of the shipbuilding market are also affecting port operations. Reinforcement of disaster prevention facilities against sea-level rise and typhoons due to climate change, and maintenance of aging quay walls, are also raised as local tasks. In particular, in 2025, as discussions on improving the traffic, parking, and pedestrian environment around Gohyeon Port proceed in connection with Geoje City's urban master plan, drawing social consensus on how to harmonize port functions with public amenities is becoming important.
