Hetbahn
Overview
Hetbahn (햇반) is an instant rice brand launched by CJ CheilJedang in 1996, and its name carries the meaning of "fresh as freshly cooked rice." By applying high-temperature and high-pressure sterilization and aseptic filling technology, it popularized retort pouch rice that can be stored at room temperature for long periods, and it is a representative processed food brand that led the formation and growth of the domestic instant rice market. Driven by the increase in single-person households and the expansion of convenient food consumption, it established itself as a key category in the home meal replacement (HMR) market.

Background and History
In Korea in the 1990s, the concept of "instant rice" itself was unfamiliar. CheilJedang (now CJ CheilJedang) first introduced Hetbahn in 1996 to respond to the decline in rice consumption and changes in dietary habits. In the early days, sales were sluggish due to the perception of it as "rice heated in a microwave," its high price, and its unfamiliar packaging, but it gradually expanded the market through quality improvements, tasting marketing, the launch of small-capacity products, and expanded distribution through convenience stores and large supermarkets. Later, as demand grew centering on busy office workers, students, and people living alone, the perception of instant rice changed from "emergency food" to "an everyday meal replacement."
Manufacturing Technology and Quality Control
The core of Hetbahn is a retort process in which rice is washed, soaked, cooked, sterilized at high temperature and high pressure, and then sealed in an aseptic state. It uses multilayer packaging that blocks oxygen and microorganisms to maintain a texture close to freshly cooked rice even at room temperature. It precisely controls the quality management of raw rice, milling, washing, soaking time, moisture content, and other factors, and its ability to produce a fluffy, non-sticky texture without clumping even after microwave cooking is cited as a technological strength.
Product Lineup
Starting with white rice, health- and nutrition-oriented products such as brown rice, black rice, mixed grain rice, five-grain rice, gondre rice, and oat rice have been steadily expanded. It diversified capacities, including 130 g and 210 g, to respond to various demands such as small eaters, single-person households, and group catering, and the "Cupbahn" series, which is prepared by pouring water into a cup, targeted demand for outdoor activities, camping, and office meals. Recently, the functional lineup, including low-sugar, high-protein, and mixed-grain-enhanced products, is also increasing.
Market and Industrial Significance
Hetbahn's success changed the direction of Korea's rice processing industry. Amid the structural problem of declining rice consumption, it opened a high-value-added processed food market using rice as a raw material, and later prompted competitors to launch instant rice products, serving as an opportunity for the entire category to grow. In addition, its range of uses expanded to various channels such as convenience store lunch boxes, catering, in-flight meals, and military supplies.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, Hetbahn is accelerating its overseas market expansion along with the K-food boom. As interest in Korean-style convenient foods grows in the United States, Japan, Europe, and elsewhere, instant rice exports have increased, and entry into local distribution channels and online sales have expanded. In Korea, premium products centered on low sugar, protein enhancement, and mixed grains are being strengthened for single-person households, older adults, and health-conscious consumers, and convenient preparation product lines such as Cupbahn are also increasing. At the same time, strategies to increase the added value of rice-processed foods are continuing in response to declining rice consumption and demographic changes, and price competitiveness, eco-friendly packaging, and sustainability are also emerging as major topics.
