Inflow
Overview
Inflow (流入) refers to the phenomenon in which external materials, energy, capital, population, information, etc. cross the boundary of a specific space or system and flow inward; it is an umbrella concept. It pairs with the opposite concept, outflow (流出), and the difference between the two values—net inflow—often determines the actual state change of a system. It is a basic term used as a unit of analysis in almost every field, from water flow in hydrology to capital markets, population movement, ecosystems, and network traffic.
Main content
Concept and calculation
Inflow is defined as 'the amount that crosses a boundary per unit time' and is quantified as inflow volume, inflow rate, inflow share, etc. Net inflow = inflow − outflow, and depending on the sign it is classified as net inflow/net outflow. In a steady state, inflow and outflow are balanced, but a sudden inflow shock can undermine system stability.
Inflow in physical and environmental fields
In hydrology, inflow means precipitation reaching a basin, tributary inflow, groundwater recharge, dam reservoir inflow, etc. Flood forecasting depends heavily on the accuracy of upstream inflow estimates. In the atmospheric field, the inflow of pollutants via westerlies, yellow dust, etc. is treated, and in the marine field, the inflow of freshwater and nutrients via rivers is dealt with as a major cause of eutrophication and red tides.
Inflow in the economic field
Capital inflow consists of foreign direct investment (FDI), portfolio investment, external borrowing, etc. Capital inflow increases investment funds and foreign currency supply, but if it surges in a short period it creates upward pressure on the exchange rate and asset bubbles, and if it switches to sudden outflow it raises the risk of a financial crisis. In addition, the inflow of tourists and consumer demand, the inflow of imported goods, etc. are also measured as economic indicators.
Inflow in the population and social field
Population inflow occurs through migration, employment, study abroad, tourism, etc.; while it increases a region's working-age population and tax revenue, it increases the burden on housing, medical care, and education infrastructure. Issues such as concentration in the capital region and local extinction, the increase in multicultural households, and fusion and conflict arising from cultural inflow are also raised.
Inflow in ecosystems
The inflow of alien and invasive species occurs through pathways such as ship ballast water, trade cargo, release of pets, and habitat shifts due to climate change. Because it can undermine ecosystem services through competition with native species, predation, and habitat disturbance, blocking at the inflow stage (quarantine and monitoring) has become a key policy in each country.
Inflow of information and data
In network and web analytics, inflow is subdivided into inbound traffic, inflow channels, inflow keywords, inflow paths, etc. In marketing, inflow volume and conversion rate by channel are the basic units of performance measurement, and recently the inflow of data for AI training and inbound control at security boundaries have become important.
Measurement indicators
Representative indicators by field are as follows. Physical: inflow in ㎥/s, inflow water quality. Economic: FDI inflow, capital account, net foreign buying. Population: net migration rate, social increase. Web: sessions, page views, inflow keywords. Ecology: number of introduced species, establishment rate.
Duality and management
Inflow is a source of vitality, growth, diversity, and resource acquisition, but it can also cause overload, pollution, asset bubbles, social conflict, and ecosystem disturbance. Therefore, policy design is required to manage not only the amount of inflow but also its speed and composition (short-term/long-term, qualitative level).
Latest trends
In 2024–2025, the structural importance of population inflow came to the fore. In Korea, foreign nationals staying in the country and foreign residents exceeded 2.6 million, and their share of the total population rose rapidly, and local governments are actively using the inflow of living population and seasonal workers as a means of responding to local extinction. In the tourism sector, foreign tourists visiting Korea and cruise arrivals are showing a recovery trend, and dispersal of inflow to local airports is being promoted. On the capital side, expectations of global rate cuts and the strong performance of the AI and semiconductor industries drove the inflow of foreign investment funds into the country, but the volatility of capital inflow to emerging economies also increased. In the technology field, as the spread of generative AI caused data inflow and inbound traffic to surge, zero-trust-based inflow control became the standard, and in the ecological field, as the inflow of tropical and subtropical marine organisms increased due to climate change, AI-based early detection systems for alien species are being introduced. In the hydrological field, due to localized heavy rains caused by abnormal climate, improving the precision of dam and river inflow forecasting has emerged as a major task.
