Jannabi

Overview

Jannabi (잔나비) is a South Korean indie rock band that debuted in 2014. With a distinctive musicality that combines the texture of 1970s analog rock with lyrical Korean-language lyrics, the band received both critical and popular recognition when 〈For Lovers Who Hesitate〉 became a mainstream hit in 2019. The band name Jannabi means monkey in archaic Korean; in its early days the group had six members, but after lineup changes it now performs as a four-member band.

Key details

Formation and early activities

Jannabi was formed in Seoul in 2014 and debuted the same year with its first full-length album, MONKEY HOTEL. On this album, the band showcased a sound spanning psychedelic rock, folk, and soul along with its distinctive analog sensibility, drawing attention in the indie scene. In 2016, it released its second full-length album, Cuckoo, raising the sophistication of its arrangements and sound, and established itself as a live band centered on Hongdae clubs and festival stages. During this period, Jannabi's performances began to spread by word of mouth, earning the assessment that it was a band that takes command of the stage.

Musical style

Jannabi's musical identity can be summarized in three main aspects. First, retro arrangements reminiscent of 1970s British rock and psychedelic pop. Second, Choi Jung-hoon's (최정훈) lyrics, which capture both literary and everyday emotions, and his distinctive husky voice. Third, a large-scale sound design that actively uses orchestral arrangements and choruses. Combining these elements, Jannabi established itself as a band represented by the two keywords youth lyricism and retro.

Major albums

  • MONKEY HOTEL (2014): Debut full-length album. It contains the band's archetypal sound.

  • Legend (2019): The album that provided a popular breakthrough through 〈For Lovers Who Hesitate〉 and is evaluated as a representative work of Jannabi.
  • The Land of Fantasy (2021): An album that expanded the fantasy worldview and orchestration.
  • Since then, it has continued to release singles and albums, broadening the scope of its activities.

〈For Lovers Who Hesitate〉, 〈A Hot Summer Night Is Gone, and What Remains Is Unseemly〉, 〈Did We Ever Love〉, 〈Dreams, Books, Power and Walls〉, 〈November Rain〉, and others are cited as representative songs. These songs simultaneously show the band's lyrical songwriting and its expansiveness in live performance.

Member composition

The band consists of Choi Jung-hoon (최정훈, leader, vocals, guitar), Kim Do-hyung (김도형, guitar), Yoo Young-hyun (유영현, bass), and Yoon Kyul (윤결, drums). In addition to band activities, Choi Jung-hoon expanded public recognition through solo and broadcast activities, which had the effect of expanding the band's overall public reach.

Recent trends

In the South Korean popular music scene of 2024–2025, band music and festival culture have continued to expand again, and Jannabi has been steadily releasing performances and music at the center of this trend. As Choi Jung-hoon's solo activities and band activities proceed in parallel, Jannabi is continuing its path in the direction of strengthening its identity as a strong live act. In addition, retro and analog sensibilities have established themselves as a major trend in domestic popular music in recent years, and Jannabi is frequently cited as a representative example that led this trend. Even within a consumption structure centered on digital music charts, the fact that the band has formed a long-term fandom while maintaining the traditional band consumption style of live performances and listening by album is importantly mentioned in recent assessments.
