JYP (JYP Entertainment)
Overview
JYP Entertainment Corp. is a comprehensive entertainment company in South Korea founded in 1997 by singer and producer Park Jin-young. Along with SM Entertainment and YG Entertainment, it is commonly called one of the "Big 3 K-POP agencies," and encompasses music planning and production, artist management, concerts, actor management, and fandom platform businesses. The name "JYP" derives from the English initials of founder Park Jin-young (Jin Young Park), and has now become established as both a company name and a music brand.
Key Details
History and Growth
Park Jin-young, who debuted as a singer in 1994, acquired Taeu Entertainment in 1997, laying the foundation for JYP's predecessor, and later reorganized the company name to launch JYP Entertainment. In the early 2000s, it produced god, Rain (RAIN), Park Ji-yoon, Wonder Girls, and others, earning recognition for both popular appeal and musicality, and in 2008 Wonder Girls' "Nobody" entered the US Billboard Hot 100, signaling the start of its overseas market expansion. In the 2010s, it established its reputation as a "master of group development" by successively launching representative groups of each generation — 2PM, miss A, GOT7, TWICE, DAY6, Stray Kids, ITZY, and NMIXX.
Business Structure and Revenue Model
JYP's revenue consists largely of albums and digital music, performances (concerts and fan meetings), management and advertising, and MD (merchandise) and licensing. In particular, the proportion of overseas performances and album sales based on its global fandom is high, and it has recorded results exceeding the growth rate of the domestic music market. Subsidiaries include the actor division of JYP Entertainment, which handles actor management, JYP Japan, JYP USA, and a Chinese corporation, and it operates points of contact between artists and fans through the fandom community platform "JYP Fan's" and its own SNS channels.
Artists and Production System
JYP operates both the "Park Jin-young producing system" and a division-of-labor structure with an in-house producer team. Representative artists include TWICE, Stray Kids, ITZY, NMIXX, DAY6, 2PM, and rookie groups, while the actor division includes a number of actors active in dramas and films. It is known to select trainees through audition programs and its own training system, and to conduct multi-stage education in vocals, dance, songwriting, languages, and character.
Management Philosophy and Characteristics
JYP is famous for its corporate culture that emphasizes "artists with character and skills." The "JYP Three Principles" (character, health, humility), which Park Jin-young has emphasized, are cited as the basic framework for trainee education and artist management. In addition, its strength is considered to be its "one-stop production" capability, which consistently controls everything from song planning to arrangement, choreography, and music videos through its own production system. It is listed on the KOSDAQ stock market, and founder Park Jin-young maintains the position of largest shareholder.
Social Contribution and Brand Expansion
JYP has carried out social contribution activities such as "EDM (Empower, Diversity, Mentorship)" and youth music education support projects, and is also working on corporate brand management, including publishing sustainability management reports from an ESG (environmental, social, and governance) perspective. Beyond the music business, it is expanding its business areas to performance planning, content production, and fan community platforms.
Latest Trends
In 2024–2025, JYP is focusing on global diversification and launching rookie groups. While world tours and overseas album sales of existing flagship groups such as Stray Kids, TWICE, and ITZY are driving performance, the strategy of expanding localized groups and projects centered on its US, Japanese, and Chinese corporations continues. In addition, as competition in fandom platforms in the K-POP market intensifies, investment in its own community, Bubble-type subscription services, and superfan business models is increasing, and content production using AI and digital technology and virtual artist businesses are also being reviewed. Meanwhile, strategic alliances with global entertainment companies and expanded auditions to discover new talent are emerging as major topics.
