It began as Korea Electric Communications Corporation (한국전기통신공사) in 1981, was privatized in 2001, and went on to establish itself as a core operator of the nation's telecommunications infrastructure, including landline telephony, high-speed internet, mobile communications, and IPTV. Establishment and History

KT's roots lie in Korea Electric Communications Corporation (한국전기통신공사), established in December 1981 by separating the communications business division of the Ministry of Communications. As the mobile communications era opened in the 1990s, it entered the wireless business through affiliates such as Korea Telecom Freetel and Korea Telecom Multimedia, and in 1998 it launched the high-speed internet service "Megapass," leading the popularization of the internet. In May 2001, it was privatized and listed on the stock market, and the following year it changed its name to KT. In 2009, it absorbed and merged its mobile communications subsidiary KTF, reorganizing itself as a wired-wireless integrated operator, and in 2018 it served as the official communications partner for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, showcasing a 5G pilot service. In April 2019, it launched the world's first commercial 5G service.

Business Segments

  • Wired and Wireless Communications: Traditional communications services such as high-speed internet, landline telephony, and 5G/LTE mobile communications form the core revenue base.
  • Media and Content: This spans IPTV "Genie TV," satellite broadcasting, and content production and distribution. It also invests in original content through affiliates such as Studio Genie.
  • Enterprise (B2B): Through kt cloud, kt ds, and others, it provides cloud, data center, IT outsourcing, and AI solutions.
  • AI and Digital Transformation: It independently developed the large-scale AI model "Mi:dm" and is pursuing new businesses such as AI contact centers (AICC), AI semiconductors, and robots.
  • Finance and Others: It operates financial affiliates such as BC Card, as well as real estate (kt estate), satellite (kt sat), and security and commerce businesses.

Governance and Management

After privatization, the CEO structure changed several times, and the digital transformation (DX) strategy began in earnest after CEO Ku Hyeon-mo took office in 2020. In 2023, CEO Kim Young-sup took office and pursued organizational reform and an AI-centered business restructuring along the axes of "customer, core business, and future." Major shareholders consist of the National Pension Service, foreign investors, and domestic institutional investors, among others.

Latest Trends

In 2024–2025, KT's biggest topic is undoubtedly the "AI transformation (AX)." To break through the stagnant growth of its core telecommunications business, it is pursuing a strategy of embedding AI across all businesses, and along with advancing its own large-scale AI model, it is expanding cooperation with global big tech companies. In 2025, it signed a strategic partnership with Microsoft (MS) and announced plans to pursue joint businesses across AI infrastructure, models, and services based on investments worth trillions of won. It is also strengthening its B2B business around the expansion of data centers and GPU infrastructure, AI cloud services, and industry-specific AI solutions (manufacturing, finance, healthcare, and public sector).

In the consumer market, it is diversifying rate plans and bundled products in response to the saturation of 5G subscribers, and refining its media strategy linking IPTV with OTT. AI-based customer services such as AI call centers, AI assistants, and hyper-personalized recommendations are also on an expanding trend. At the same time, as competition in AI semiconductors and AI data centers intensifies among the three major telecommunications carriers, KT is focusing on converting its strength in telecommunications infrastructure into competitiveness in AI infrastructure. Efforts to improve its management fundamentals, such as improving organizational culture, reforming personnel and compensation systems, and fostering in-house AI talent, are also underway in parallel.
