Maple Escape
Overview
Maple Escape is an escape room and puzzle game that uses the world, characters, and town settings of the MapleStory IP as its subject matter. Players must collect and combine clues presented in familiar towns and dungeons to find an escape route within a time limit, and its core characteristic is the combination of nostalgia for the original work and the sense of achievement from solving puzzles. With the original work's vast lore as a backdrop, it aims to offer a wide range of difficulty levels, from casual puzzles that can be enjoyed lightly to multiplayer cooperative escape rooms.
Main Content
Genre and Gameplay
Maple Escape follows a stage-based escape room adventure format. Each stage consists of a single enclosed space or town area, and players investigate objects placed throughout the space to obtain clues, then combine them to solve locks, puzzles, and codes. Time limits, number of moves, and number of hints used act as evaluation factors, and the structure is such that the faster the objective is achieved, the higher the grade of reward obtained. The hint system is provided in stages so that progress does not come to a complete stop even in sections where players are stuck.
Worldview and Story
The setting is composed of representative towns and dungeons of Maple World. Familiar regions such as Henesys, Kerning City, El Nath, and Sleepywood are reinterpreted as stages, and NPCs from the original work appear as clients or helpers. The story unfolds in a way that melts the original work's major events and settings into puzzles on top of the basic framework of "an adventurer suddenly trapped in a sealed space one day collects clues to return to the original world." The intention is to simultaneously provide users who enjoyed the original work with the pleasure that comes from faithful attention to lore, and new users with the fun of an independent puzzle game.
Key Systems
First, there is the clue collection and combination system. Acquired items and observation records are stored in the inventory, and the combination method of combining two or more clues to create new information forms the center of the puzzles. Second, there is observation mode, in which players can zoom in on the screen or focus on searching a specific object to discover hidden marks. Third, there are achievements and collection elements; if players escape under specific conditions or find all hidden clues, the compendium is filled and a title is granted. Fourth, there is cooperative mode, which supports a method in which 2 to 4 people divide roles, share clues from different areas, and jointly solve puzzles. In addition, there are difficulty adjustment features and time extension items, making it possible to play according to the user's skill level.
Platform and Usage
It is designed to be enjoyed in short sessions on mobile and PC environments, and the common form is that basic stages are open for free, while partial paid elements are applied to additional chapters, hints, and decoration elements. The play time for one stage is generally around 10 to 30 minutes, and the strength cited is that it can be progressed without burden during spare time.
Latest Trends
As of 2024-2025, the expansion of IP-based casual and puzzle genres is notable. Small-scale puzzle and escape room-style content aimed at the original work's fandom is steadily appearing in the indie developer and fan creation spheres, and strategy and reaction videos through short-form platforms have established themselves as an inflow route. In addition, live service-style operational elements such as seasonal updates, limited theme stages, strengthened cooperative play, and multi-device support based on cloud saves are trending toward being incorporated. Offline connections with escape room cafes and crossover content with original work events are also drawing attention as new attempts.
