Mikel Arteta

Overview

Mikel Arteta Amatriain is a former footballer and current football manager, born on March 26, 1982, in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, Spain. As a player, he played as a central midfielder and went through FC Barcelona's youth system, Paris Saint-Germain, Rangers FC, Everton FC, and Arsenal FC; at Arsenal, he served as captain and was a central figure for the team. After being appointed Arsenal manager in December 2019, he placed the team in a phase of long-term rebuilding, and by the mid-2020s he had re-established Arsenal at the forefront of the Premier League title race.

Playing career

Arteta grew up at La Masia, Barcelona's prestigious youth academy, but struggled to break into the first team and moved to Paris Saint-Germain. He then played for Rangers FC in Scotland, where he experienced a treble (league, cup, and league cup), and in 2005 joined Everton FC, where he showed steady ability in the Premier League. After moving to Arsenal in 2011, he became a key midfielder for the team based on precise passing and game-controlling ability, and from 2016 he wore the captain's armband. In May 2016 he announced his retirement and immediately began his coaching career as a coach at Manchester City under manager Pep Guardiola.

Managerial career

On December 20, 2019, he was appointed manager of Arsenal FC, which had fallen into poor form. In his first season, 2019-20, he proved his managerial ability by leading the team to FA Cup and Community Shield victories, but afterward the team remained in mid-table in the league while continuing its overhaul. Through a long rebuilding project (the so-called trust in 'the process'), he simultaneously brought in and sold young players, building core assets such as Martin Ødegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Magalhães, and William Saliba. In 2022-23 the team finished second in the league, and in 2023-24 it again finished second behind Manchester City, continuing the title race to the end; in September 2024 he extended his contract until 2027.

Tactical philosophy

Arteta inherits Guardiola's positional play philosophy while employing tactics adapted to Arsenal. The base formation is 4-3-3, and its characteristics include the use of an 'inverted full-back' who moves into central midfield areas, occupation of the half-spaces, high pressing, and quick transitions after winning the ball. In addition, corner and free-kick tactics centered on set-piece coach Nicolas Jover are regarded as producing scoring at the league's highest level, and the defensive organization and line control also record top-tier league metrics.

Major achievements

  • 2019-20 FA Cup winners, Community Shield winners
  • 2020-21 Community Shield winners
  • 2022-23, 2023-24 Premier League runners-up
  • 2023-24 Premier League record for fewest goals conceded and set-piece goals
  • Central figure in Arsenal's youngest and longest rebuilding project in the club's history

Latest trends

In the 2024-25 season, Arteta's Arsenal once again continued the league title race but ultimately finished second, and in the League Cup and FA Cup it produced results below expectations. In November 2024, sporting director Edu resigned, and in 2025 Andrea Berta was appointed as the new sporting director, reorganizing the transfer and squad-building system. In the summer 2025 transfer market, the attack and midfield were reinforced, and in the early part of the 2025-26 season the team started in the upper reaches of the league, continuing its title challenge. In addition, Arteta is consistently mentioned as a candidate for the Spain national team and other clubs' managerial positions, but based on his long-term contract with Arsenal, he places weight on continuing the project. Tactically, set-piece utilization, flexible formation changes during matches, and player rotation are evaluated as major change points since 2024.
