Founding Background and History
Munhakdongne was launched in 1993 together with the founding of the quarterly literary magazine Munhakdongne. Amid changes in the Korean literary world in the 1990s, it grew by discovering works that crossed the boundary between pure literature and popular literature. In the 2000s, it expanded its world literature series and young adult literature brand, and since the 2010s it has broadened its scope into digital businesses such as e-books, audiobooks, and web novel platforms. It is now established as a comprehensive literary company encompassing book publishing, literary magazine publication, literary award operation, and content IP business.

Representative Authors and Works
Munhakdongne has published works by representative Korean authors such as Kim Young-ha, Park Min-gyu, Pyun Hye-young, and Han Kang. Han Kang’s We Do Not Part (작별하지 않는다), Greek Lessons (희랍어 시간), and others were published by Munhakdongne and introduced to readers at home and abroad. Kim Young-ha’s Diary of a Murderer (살인자의 기억법), The Reason for Travel (여행의 이유), and others are also closely associated with Munhakdongne. In addition, it actively publishes new writers’ first short story collections and novels, leading the generational shift in Korean literature.
Literary Ecosystem and Social Role
Munhakdongne serves as a hub of the literary ecosystem beyond a simple publisher. It discovers new writers through its literary magazine and awards, supports book talks, readings, and reader gatherings, and participates in reading programs for schools and libraries. It also helps K-literature enter overseas markets through translation support and cooperation with foreign publishers.
Digital Transformation and Content Expansion
It is expanding e-book and audiobook production and seeking expansion into source IP for web novels and webtoons. Through its own platform and reader community, it provides work information, author interviews, and reading content, and also carries out secondary copyright businesses such as dramas, films, and performances. This is a strategy responding to the digitalization of the publishing market and media convergence.
Recent Trends
In 2024, with Han Kang’s Nobel Prize in Literature, global interest in Korean literature surged. Han Kang’s works published by Munhakdongne have been reexamined by overseas readers and media, and inquiries about translations and overseas rights have increased. In 2024–2025, the publishing industry is introducing AI-based translation, proofreading, and audio production tools and expanding short-form content and BookTuber marketing. Munhakdongne is also strengthening reader-participation book talks, online reading communities, and links with e-book subscription services, and increasing IP planning with webtoon and drama adaptation in mind. In addition, the share of nonfiction and young adult literature dealing with contemporary agendas such as climate, gender, and migration is growing.
