Key Details
Early Life and Education
He was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. His father Errol Musk was an engineer, and his mother Maye Musk was a model and dietitian. As a child he was absorbed in reading, and at age 12 he earned his first income by selling a game he had made himself. At 17 he moved to Canada, attended Queen's University, and then earned bachelor's degrees in physics and economics at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. In 1995 he enrolled in a doctoral program at Stanford University but dropped out after two days and jumped into the internet business.

Management Style and Controversies
Musk is known for vertical integration, rapid development cycles, and aggressive goal-setting. On the other hand, there is also much controversy over excessive labor demands, abrupt layoffs, regulatory risk arising from social media statements, and disputes with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In 2018 he settled with the SEC over statements about taking Tesla private, and he has been criticized for opposing COVID-19 lockdowns and for his opposition to unionization.
Social Impact
He is assessed as the figure who led the popularization of electric vehicles and the commercialization of private space development. Meanwhile, criticism also coexists regarding his expanded political engagement, changes to X's content policy, and the spread of disinformation.
Latest Developments
He publicly endorsed Donald Trump in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, and in 2025 he joined the administration as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), pushing to reduce federal spending before stepping down the same year. Tesla is focusing on the robotaxi, Full Self-Driving (FSD), and humanoid robot Optimus businesses, while SpaceX continues Starship test flights and the expansion of the satellite internet Starlink. xAI is pursuing integration with X and advancing its conversational AI Grok, and Neuralink continues to expand clinical trials of brain implants. His net worth surpassed $400 billion for the first time ever at the end of 2024, and in 2025 Tesla shareholders approved a large performance-based compensation package, reaffirming Musk's long-term management control. The fact that political controversy is shaking Tesla's brand image and sales in some regions is also a major issue.
