Establishment Background and History
The roots of Nonghyup Bank lie in the credit business division of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, which was established in 1961. In the 2000s, structural problems between the credit business and the economic business of Nonghyup were continuously raised, and under the revised Agricultural Cooperatives Act of 2011, it was decided to separate the credit business and make it an independent bank. Accordingly, Nonghyup Bank was officially launched on March 2, 2012, starting with capital of approximately KRW 4.5 trillion. Later, in 2013, NH Financial Group was established as a holding company system, and Nonghyup Bank became its subsidiary. This completed the current structure in which the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation handles agricultural support functions, while NH Financial Group and Nonghyup Bank handle financial functions.
Major Business Areas
Like ordinary commercial banks, Nonghyup Bank handles a broad range of financial products, including deposits, loans, foreign exchange, cards, asset management, funds, and bancassurance. In particular, it operates specialized products for farmers, such as farmer loans, agricultural machinery purchase funds, and farming funds, while maintaining small branches in farming and fishing villages to improve financial accessibility. In urban areas, it has strengthened corporate finance and private banking (PB) services, and since the 2020s it has focused on digital financial innovation by expanding the functions of its mobile banking app, NH All-One Bank.
Digital Transformation and Innovation
In recent years, Nonghyup Bank has expanded cooperation with fintech companies and introduced AI-based chatbot consultation services, big-data-driven personalized recommendation systems, and blockchain-based mobile wallet functions. In 2023, it established the NH Digital Innovation Headquarters to accelerate digital financial transformation and has also pursued service openness linked with the open banking system. In addition, through the Regional Nonghyup Digital Transformation Support Project, which strengthens linkages with agricultural and livestock cooperatives nationwide, it enables local Nonghyup cooperatives to use the same level of digital financial services.
Social Contribution and Agricultural Support
Beyond being a simple commercial bank, Nonghyup Bank actively carries out social contribution activities for the income stability of farmers and the development of rural areas. A representative example is setting aside a certain portion of its annual profits as the Agricultural Development Fund for farm support, young farmer training, and agricultural product distribution improvement projects. It also operates the NH Children's Finance Classroom, which provides financial education to local children's centers, along with rural labor assistance and multicultural family support programs. These efforts show Nonghyup Bank's identity as pursuing both profitability and public interest as a financial company.
Recent Trends (2024-2025)
From 2024 to 2025, Nonghyup Bank has shown several major changes and trends amid the rapidly changing financial environment.
First, it has focused on strengthening soundness in preparation for interest rate increases and an economic downturn. It adjusted its household loan and corporate loan portfolios, strengthened delinquency management, and expanded loan products for middle- and low-credit borrowers to enhance financial inclusion.
Second, it has begun full-scale adoption of artificial intelligence and generative AI technologies. In 2024, it introduced an internal NH AI Counselor using large language models (LLM) to improve customer service efficiency, and in the first half of 2025, it plans to apply an AI-based credit evaluation model to the bank's entire loan screening process.
Third, the digitalization of agricultural finance is accelerating. In line with the government's smart farm expansion policy, Nonghyup Bank launched products offering low-interest funds for smart farm facility investment and piloted a demand forecasting service using agricultural product price data.
Fourth, the bank is reorganizing its branch network while strengthening non-face-to-face channels. Large branches in cities are being converted into digital lounges, while mobile branches and cooperative joint ATMs are being expanded in farming and fishing villages to improve branch efficiency.
Finally, in the second half of 2025, it announced plans to launch the NH Integrated App, merging the existing NH All-One Bank and NH Smart Banking into one and strengthening agricultural information functions. Through this, the bank is moving beyond a simple financial platform to become a comprehensive agricultural platform.
