Paju
Overview
Paju (파주시) is a city in northwestern Gyeonggi Province, facing Gimpo across the Han River to the west, bordering Goyang and Yangju to the east, and adjoining the Military Demarcation Line (DMZ) to the north, making it a representative border-region city. It has grown to a population of about 500,000 and has a distinctive urban structure in which the historical heritage of the Joseon era coexists with modern high-tech industry and publishing culture. Located within roughly 30 km of central Seoul, it simultaneously serves residential and industrial functions for the capital region.

Geography and Natural Environment
Paju is situated in the estuary zone where the Imjin River and the Han River meet, and its northern terrain is a mix of mountains and plains. Mountains such as Gamaksan and Nogosan surround the northern part of the city, while the Unjeong and Gyoha areas in the south are relatively flat plains where urban development has been concentrated. The Han River estuary is known as a migratory bird habitat, with a well-preserved wetland ecosystem.
History
Paju was a contested ground among Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, and during the Goryeo period it was divided into Papyeong-hyeon and Seowon-hyeon, among others. In the Joseon era it was elevated to Paju-mok and served as the administrative center of northern Gyeonggi. It was also the site of the Imjin River defense line and the opening engagement of the Battle of Haengju during the Imjin War. After the Korean War, it became a strategic military location adjoining the armistice line, and in 1996 Paju County was elevated to Paju City. The city is rich in historical resources, including the relics of Yulgok Yi I (Jayun Seowon and Hwaseokjeong), Bangujeong, and the Paju Samneung.
Administrative Districts and Population
Paju comprises several living zones, including Unjeong, Gyoha, Geumchon, Munsan, and Beopwon. The population grew rapidly after the 2000s with the development of the Unjeong New Town; Geumchon serves as the administrative center, while Munsan handles administrative and military functions for the border region. The Tongil Dongsan and Tanhyeon areas are where tourism and cultural functions are concentrated.
Industry and Economy
Paju is home to the Paju Publishing City, the largest publishing and printing cluster in the country, where hundreds of publishers and printing companies are concentrated. In addition, a display industrial complex centered on the LG Display Paju plant has been established, making the city a key hub for advanced manufacturing. The regional economy is further supported by general industrial complexes in the Wollong and Munsan areas, tourism-oriented agriculture in Tanhyeon-myeon, and distribution and logistics facilities in Unjeong.
Culture and Tourism
The Heyri Art Village is a cultural community founded by artists and is Paju's signature tourist attraction. The city is rich in security and peace tourism resources such as Imjingak Peace Nuri Park, Dorasan Station, and the Odusan Unification Observatory, while the Bridge of Freedom and the Mangbaedan Altar symbolize the pain of division. Within the Paju Publishing City, the Forest of Wisdom is beloved as a large bookstore and library. Experiential tourism is also active, including the Provence Village, sensibly styled campsites, and DMZ ecological exploration courses.
Transportation
The Gyeongui-Jungang Line (Munsan–Seoul) and the GTX-A line (Unjeong Station) provide the city's rail transit, while Jayu-ro, Tongil-ro, and the Seoul–Munsan Expressway connect it with Seoul and neighboring areas. In the past, accessibility was limited by US military bases (such as Camp Greaves) and civilian control line restrictions, but this has improved with the expansion of roads and railways.
Education
Along with the development of the Unjeong New Town, Paju has seen active construction of new schools, and it has a diverse educational infrastructure including middle and high schools, specialized high schools, and international schools (such as the Chadwick Songdo/Paju campus network). Reading and cultural education programs linked to the Paju Publishing City have also become a local hallmark.
Recent Trends
In 2024–2025, Paju has seen significantly improved access to Seoul thanks to the opening of GTX-A Unjeong Station, continuing population inflow and changes in the real estate market. The government's easing of border-region regulations and policies to revitalize DMZ peace tourism are also under discussion, and ecological tourism in the Imjin and Han River estuaries and a peace economy belt initiative are being pursued. At the same time, fluctuations in the display industry and demands for expanded transportation and educational infrastructure in the Unjeong New Town have emerged as major issues. Paju aims to become a sustainable city model that combines high-tech industry with peace and cultural tourism.
